This vehicle is the bridge between the X-33 and the DC-Xa. On August 28,
1996 The Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC) was awarded by NASA a contract to design,
build and test this Space Plane. It will be powered by a government furnished engine. The X-34 would be air launched, by dropping it out of Lockheed-1011 aircraft, thus eliminating the costly booster rockets. It would be able to reach speeds of Mach 8, reach altitudes of 250,000 ft, and return to land horizontally on a conventional runway. It is lighter and smaller than the X-33. This single-engine rocket vehicle is 59-ft
long. According to Nasa Press Release # 97-043, "Plans call for the reusable X-34 to fly up to 25 times within a year's period beginning in late 1998."
