Russell Carney, Jr., a resident of New Carrollton, Maryland, was found Monday, January 6, 2003, in his apartment. The exact time of death has not been determined.
Russell attended Frank W. Ballou Senior High School, in Washington, D.C. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he distinguished himself as a member of the Honor Guard Unit and later earned the rank of sergeant. He was stationed at Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C. and at Camp David, Maryland while he was assigned to President Jimmy Carter.
He also completed a tour of duty in Okinawa, Japan. He was nominated for and received an appointment to The United States Naval Academy Preparatory School. After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps., Russell attended the Southern University Consortium, taking classes at Louisiana State University. After moving to Detroit, Michigan, he continued his studies at Wayne State University.
Russell was an outstanding technological engineer whose work with General Motors, Sears, Marriott Corporation, Unisys, and Verizon earned not only praises but also incentive awards. His jobs were usually mid-level and senior managerial positions at the corporate level.
He is survived by his father, Russell Carney, Sr., of Mt. Rainier, MD; his mother, Martha Little Carney of Hampton, VA; sisters Aletha C. Calloway (Gonzales) of Indianapolis, IN and Anitha C. Moses of East Point, GA; two aunts, Mary Virden of Atlanta, GA and Pauline Brown of Greenville, NC; two great aunts, Minnie Chance and Lurlean Williams of Bethel, NC; three nephews: Roger, Jr., Randy, and Russell of East Point, GA; nieces Anika and Jada Calloway of Virginia; dear Friends Emily Washington, Anthony and Arnold Washington, Andre Washington, and James Lloyd of Washington, DC, and a host of other cousins and friends.
