Tomas Fried, of Prague, whose wife is related to our Kubalek family, was kind enough to attempt a translation of the obituary for me. He stated that he had difficulty with the flowery language and that his English is not very good, but between his translation and my guesses, the following is a fairly readable rendition of the obituary. Ely, Iowa, July 5, 1909. - We are deeply saddened to give notice of the death of our beloved mother and grandmother Anna Holcova who died on Thursday, July 2nd at 81 years of age. She was buried in Anderson Cemetery at 2 o'clock p.m. on July 3rd with many friends and relatives in attendance. She was born in Bor district of Chrudim [Bohemia] and came to America in the year of 1858 with her husband. He died in the year *1868 at the age of 47 years. We give heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped her in her illness and with her funeral arrangements. Further thanks to everyone who came to the funeral
and for the flowers that covered the coffin. Thank you especially to the Reverand Balcar for his sermon and to the singers for their songs; to the gravediggers for
digging the grave; and to Mrs. Kopecke and Becickova for their last service to her [laying out the body]; and to Mr. Hanus for the funeral arrangements. Finally to
everyone for their support to her and her family as they accompanied her to eternal rest in heaven. Thank you to everyone. *Notes and corrections: Her husband Vaclav Holec's will was written in 1869, shortly before he died. His grave marker states he lived from 1822 to 1869, so the obituary date of his death in 1868 is an error. Anna's gravestone states she lived from 1826 to 1908 instead of the obituary's date in 1909; however the marker was replaced years later by the Holets Family Reunion association and I believe a mistake was made on the year of her death at that time. The year of her birth is also in question - if she died in 1909 at the age of 81, she would have been born in 1827 or 1828. The 1900 Census states that the family arrived in the United States in 1857, rather than 1858. Other records state they arrived in 1857 and set up their homestead in 1858. Anna's obituary states she was born in Bor district of Chrudim. Family records say she was born in Chrudim. Hopefully further research will enable us to pinpoint exactly where that is in the Czech Republic. |
