Girvan Surname Message Board
(Girvan/ Girvin/ Gervan and other variations)

This board was closed down January 2, 2005 because it had reached the limit of 250 messages posted.  It had been in operation since early 2001.

I have taken many hours to save all the messages below so the information they contain will not be lost.  In the email addresses, the @ has been replaced with XX, to avoid spambots collecting them.  Keep in mind that some addresses are no doubt out of date.

In the future, I suggest you use the Girvan Surname Message Board at Rootsweb.  Thanks very much for participating on this board.  Quite a few connections have resulted!

1. Girvan Family Tree/ Northern Ireland to Australia/ 1600's to present - Matthew Girvan December 21, 2004, 3:21 am

Posted by Matthew Girvan on December 21, 2004, 3:21 am

This is my Girvan family tree. I hope this can help other Girvan's searching for their family history. This family started with David Girvan who came from Girvan in Scotland. The tree then covers family in Northern Ireland and finally Australia. I do have some further information about my Great Great Grandfather Hugh Girvan and his descendants to the present day, so if anyone has questions about them i may be able to help if you post the questions here. Also if anyone has further information about these family members i would really appreciate it if you could post it here. Thank you from Matthew

13a. Are you related to Vancouver, BC Girvans? - Barb May 27, 2004, 10:13 am

There was a branch of our Girvans, originally from Campbeltown, Argyll, that eventually ended up in British Columbia. I have always wondered if the "Seattle" Girvans were related. My parents met some Girvans there - I believe they owned a restaurant?
Just in case you might come from "Vancouver" Girvans - here is an excerpt from a 1953 letter written to a relative.

".....The Girvans have a cousin in Vancouver (James Girvan). He is a painter. He used to have his painter & paperhanging shop in Royal Ave. ...... He came to Canada when Munro was minister of Big Kirk. That is not today or yesterday. I visited him last time I was there. He has a swell big house called "Dalriada", also a sunken garden. He may be retired now. When I went to his door and knocked, he did not know who I was. I asked him for a drink of Crock-na heilan water. He said "I dont' know who you are, but come in anyway." I had a nice visit with him.

Hello Robert,
I have corresponded with Phyllis Williams of Ontario who came originally from Northern Ireland. She is related to Gawn Girvan from just outside Belfast. Gawn Girvan's grave is in St Elizabeth's graveyard in Dundonald, 6 miles south of Belfast. I went to the grave on Phyllis's behalf and noted the details. There is some correspondence elsewhere on the Girvan message board - look for Williams.

Do you live in Northern Ireland?  I too am from the Newtownards Road (Bryson Street).

am trying to locate the origins of my paternal grandfather. His name was John West Girvan,as recorded on my Father's birth-certificate in 1919. He was married to Audrey Hallsworth from Derby and they had one son Wilfred Everard Girvan (my Father), Soon after, he returned to Ireland we are told ,and the marriage ended. He has two grandchildren, my brother Andy and myself,3 gt.grandchildren & 5 gt.gt.children!
My brother and I often wonder if John remarried and we have step-relations someplace.I think John may have been in the services, when he met my grandmother, as years ago we had a photo of him ,in some sort of uniform in a hot country.(This has gone now but his resemblance to my father was unmistakable.)Maybe he is one of Barb Girvan's missing Johns ?

Have you seen at the following the Nesbitt information? There is also a link there to a Nesbitt page, from where I got the information (doesn't work any more). It doesn't give information on Maragaret Girvan's family however. If you know the order of birth of their children, perhaps the second son is named after Margaret's father and would give you a clue. The first daughter may be named after Margaret's mother.

JOHN NESBIT b. Northern Ireland ? (father of Robert John Nesbitt, Albert Nesbitt, Samuel James Nesbitt and Emily Nesbitt) farmer of Limekiln Farm (ca 56 acres), Lislea Co Armagh, d. 14 April 1922, m. Margaret Girvan, d. 14 Jun 1923,

ALBERT NESBITT b. Northern Ireland? (son of John Nesbitt by his wife Margaret Girvan) migrated to New Zealand.

EMILY NESBITT b. Northern Ireland ? (dau. of John Nesbitt by his wife Margaret Girvan) migrated New Zealand.

SAMUEL JAMES NESBITT b Kilcam, Co Armagh 10 Feb 1901 (son of John Nesbitt by his wife Margaret Girvan; and father of Sarah Margaret Nesbitt) migrated to New Zealand ca 1925 in the ship Ruahine ex Southampton, m........., with issue known 1d.

I hope the lists will be useful to someone in locating "where" their ancestor lived in Ireland/Northern Ireland. Too bad my Girvans had already left!

22a. Re: Girvan - Sue Gordon (segordonXXportables1.ngfl.gov.uk) December 26, 2004, 4:06 pm

My grandmother was Elizabeth Margaret Girvan born in Liverpool January 6, 1896. Younger sister Maud and brother Jack. Her father was a Girvan from Scotland, name not known and opened a pharmacy in Scotland Road. Her mother was also called Elizabeth and worked as a teacher at a local Board School (presumably only until she married).

Elizabeth Margaret (Elsie) went to school at Blackburn House/Place near Rodney Street and later married James Buffel. They had one child Heather Maud, my mother.

Jack Girvan inherited the family pharmacy upon the death of my great grandfather.

Interested to know if this links to your Girvan tree in Liverpool.

Hi Sue
Your mail makes interesting reading however as far as I know we have no christian names similar to those of your ancestors in my side of the family! I cannot say for certain that we haven't as I have not researched too far back. My own father died when I was quite young and my mother unfortunately lost contact with his mother's side - the Girvans. I am staying with my daughter away from home at the moment but would be delighted to pass on any info that you think might help you in your researches, please contact in the new year if you think I can help.

Compliments of the season

24a. Have you read the "Girvan Correspondence" pages - Barb January 22, 2004, 5:55 pm
Tom,
Thanks for posting all the info you have found on the Girvans of Carnmoney and Co. Antrim. I, too, am stumped on my early Girvan ancestors. They moved from County Antrim to Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland (a short trip by boat) sometime before 1820 and I have been unable to find where they came from in Antrim. The family story is that they moved from Ayrshire to Antrim, but I haven't yet proved it - maybe never will.
If you haven't already done so, take a look at the collected correspondence over the past years at my genealogy site - there are two web pages of emails and "old" board postings, some of them very informative. Perhaps you might find something there.

The link for the Correspondence pages are located at the bottom of my "Girvan" page.  Good luck!

26c. Re: Girvan @.Harper. - Barb January 28, 2004, 4:58 pm

Thanks, Tom
I have checked the IGI ad naseum. I know my earliest John Girvan (m. to Margaret Black) were both from Antrim. Margaret's father was Thomas Black and her mother's maiden name was Margaret Hart. I have been unable to find Margaret's family in Antrim, however.

I have not been able to find John Girvan's father's name, nor do I know his eldest son's name, which could give a clue to his father's name. A death certificate might give his parents' names, but we believe he died before 1855 when they started keeping death records. We think he died sometime between the 1851 Census and 1855. At any rate, until I can verify John's parents names, it is difficult to figure out which Antrim Girvan family he comes from.

The search goes on! :-)      http://www.oocities.org/Heartland/4081/girvan.html

27. Eliza Jane GIRVIN married to ? McGrattan - Bonnie (bonsmailXXyahoo.com)December 11, 2003, 2:47 pm

Hello again,
I was recently given an entire family tree of Girvin's if anyone is interested. It starts with Charles Girvin b 1779, husband of Rachel Carleton. However, the Eliza Girvin I am looking for might be this Charles Girvin's YOUNGER SISTER but I can't find any info back that far as she was born in aprox. 1786. Also, she married into the McGrattan family and moved from Ireland to Ontario Canada. Childrens names were: Alexander GIRVIN Grattan, (name shortened) David, Peter, and Mary and maybe others. Eliza Jane Girvin Grattan is buried in the Pentland cemetary on Amherst Island in Ontario Canada.
Thanks.........!!!

Hi I would like to find out how far our name goes back I stay in laurieston In Falkirk Scotland

29a. Falkirk Girvans - Barb January 22, 2004, 6:01 pm
Hi George,
I don't know how far the name goes back, but some say it is from Gaelic.
I ran into a Ray Girvan some years ago via email, and I think he said he was from Falkirk, and that his step-father or step-grandfather came from Campbeltown, Argyll. Since my Girvan family lived in Campbeltown for generations (and some are still there) I was hoping we were related, but I never heard from him again. Are you related to Ray?

32b. Re: Girvin - living in Florida - Judy (jam33XXcharter.net)October 17, 2004, 4:19 pm

Help! My great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Girvan, was born in Fernandino, Florida, on December 23, 1860. Her parents were John Girvan and Martha Agnew who were married in 1846 at Ruloo Presbyterian Meeting House, Ruloo Parish, Antrim Co., N. Ireland. Their marriage certificate lists both John and Martha's fathers names both to be John.
Family tradition says that John and Martha ran away from Scotland and got married in Ireland because she was underage. Family lore also states that John and Martha both died in Florida while Mary Elizabeth was very young.

I am desperate for ANY Florida Girvan information. Hope this message reaches you.

Katie - I don't recognize any of the names you posted. However, you may get a better response if you add what area/areas your people live or lived, since there are Girvan families all over the world. You might try to find your grandparents' obituaries to find out more and find the family on census records. Church records sometimes provide information as well.

37. Charles Girvin/Ontario and Michigan/1848-1912 - Jim Arnold (jsarnoldXXaol.com)March 6, 2003, 7:18 pm

I'm not a Girvin but came across Charles Girvin, Civil War vet, and hope someone already has a connection, or finds one and adds Charles to their tree. I'd also like to hear from someone that this vet is buried in a grave that indicates he's a CW vet.
Charles was born Apr 1845 in Canada and immigrated to the US in 1856. He served in the Union Army in the 12th Mich Inf. Charles married Jane/Jennie Steward 13 July 1883 in Goderich, Huron Co, Ontario. Charles and Jennie were enumerated in the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Manistique, Schoolcraft Co, Michigan. No children. He died about 1912 in Manistique.
My connection: my g grandfather, Robert Cochran, married Jane (second marriage for both) 20 Jan 1916 in Manistique.
If anyone wants sources for the above info please contact me.
All responses will be appreciated.

38. Girvin - Jayne February 7, 2003, 3:17 am

We have lived in Dungannon in Co.Tyrone, N.Ireland for generations. My father was Thomas Girvin, now deceased and his father was Joseph Girvin. There were quite a few Terence Girvins before that.
I have two brothers, Joseph and Francis and a sister Briegeen. Joseph has four children.
If it were not for my dad our branch of the Girvin family would now be extinct as he was the only one out of his brothers(Pat and John)to have children.
My computer is not printing the symbol for 'at'so I just had to write it instead.

The notices say that he was born on June 19, 1843 in Tyrone County, Ireland, and came to America with his parents when he was seven years old. They settled on a government tract in Hamtramck township at 11587 Hawthorne avenue in Detroit, Michigan.  One of the notices includes a photo of him in his later years.
