Yes, we are slow. But that's why we described this newsletters as:
"published electronically and irregularly (as in when we have
enough material and time to do it)." Time can be a precious thing
indeed!

Also, in addition to our LightRaider NET Web archive page at
http://www.alaska.net/~cass/draid/lr-net.html
there is an email option now available. Send a message:

To: cass-request@mat.net
Subject: Archive
Message: get lightraider.p1

(for issue 1 or lightraider.p2 for issue 2 etc.)

The first five issues are there and we'll try to get issue 6 set up soon as well.

~ WordRune scrolls ~
copyright David Staley staley@en.com

An important WordRune that I think goes hand in hand with #55 Purge
Evil WordRune (covered in issue #5) is #49, No Sweat WordRune.

NIV Romans 8:31b
"If God is for us, who can be against us?"

This simple and easily memorized scripture (especially if you know
the D+K song) is good by itself, but also a good balance to #55.
Whereas #55 helps with the offensive strategy of the LightRaider, #49
helps with the defensive side of a battle. The No Sweat WordRune will
allow you to raise your LightRaiders 'Shield of Faith rating by 3 for
the duration of one encounter'. This Wordrune may only be used once
per day so use it wisely.

The scripture used for #49 is an awesome one. It sums up in a
simple phrase why we should not live in fear as Christians. This is
not a promise of no hardships or challenges from the enemy, but that
God is the one who is our deliverer and protector.

Also, there is an interesting word in this verse that hit me when I
really pondered it, and that is the word 'if'. I can take that to
mean, 'Do I believe that God is for me, and do I accept that as
truth?', but also 'Am I in a position to say that God is for me?'.

The first question is important for a Christian. This is where
trusting God is who He says He is comes into play. There won't be to
much opportunity for a victorious Christian life if this isn't dealt
with and resolved. We should be able to quote this verse with
confidence. I know pondering it has really stirred me to examine
myself and make sure I am believing what I profess.

Now, if I am a Christian reading this verse the second question is
answered already. That is, I know that the unconditional love of God
has redeemed me to Himself through Christ, and nothing can separate
that. But if I were not a Christian and I read this verse, how could I
come to terms with that second question? The first question could be
answered by a non-Christian with a 'yeah sure' without real
conviction, but the second question hits on a personal level. It
calls for a personal account of justification. If there is a
non-Christian in your Raidparty what a great opportunity to point out
the security in this one verse, and how one can obtain that security.
It can be just nice sounding words, or it can be a peace for the heart
and mind through troubled times in this life and in the passing from
this life.

     God Bless you all!

~LARP: Live-Action DragonRaid!~
copyright Charles Banders charlie@mat.net

What if I knew of a way to get more people interested in DragonRaid,
the people you have already playing excited about playing more, and
even get people that donÆt like playing DragonRaid to play?!? We call
it Live-Action DragonRaid! But whatÆs involved, you ask?

For those interested, we didnÆt really come up with this as a spin-off
of other Live Action Role Playing (LARP) games that are done. We just
stumbled into combining some fun elements of other things weÆve done like
Renaissance Fairs, How to Host a Mystery, Fencing and things like that.
One large step in that direction was when we did a ôbachelor partyö for
one of our group. But we didnÆt want a typical bachelor party so we
designed it to be a knight on a quest who had to successfully pass many
tests and vanquish foes to fulfill his quest. Later this now-married-man
wanted to host a DragonRaid game where Steve, the usual referee (my favorite
term for Adventure Master) was able to participate as a player rather than
lead the game. So he invited the æregularsÆ up to Summit Lake at the top of
Hatcher Pass to have a Live-Action DragonRaid game. So instead of huddling
around papers on floor rolling dice to play, the players were shivering in
the wind wrapped in blankets to play. Sounds like fun, right?

LOCATION
You need a good location to host a Live-Action DragonRaid. The first
one up on Summit Lake was an excellent location. It is a bit of a drive up
into the mountains -- 4-wheel drive isnÆt necessary in the summer, but it
doesnÆt hurt if you have it! Just the drive up to Summit Lake is exciting
as you ascend up the pass. Also it is less than an hour drive from Palmer
where most of the players live (although the referees had a two-hour drive
from Anchorage). The barren landscape above the treeline helped to give it
an exciting setting. The fairly remote location kept it so only a few
tourists brave enough to drive up there took our pictures.

COSTUMES
Maybe you have been to a Renaissance Fair or the Scottish Games or
something like that. One of the key elements at one of these is the costumes.
People dress up to participate and it helps them get into their role-playing.
What level people get into their costumes depends on each person. Some people
like making costumes from scratch and really get into the whole process.
Others simply wrap themselves in their blanket-turned-traveling-cloak and
wear a hat! ItÆs amazing what a hat can accomplish!

BATTLE
I can sense raised eyebrows at this point. WeÆve come up with a couple of
ideas for this. The one we havenÆt tried is simply having the adventurers
carry their starlots and resolve battle with their starlots where the
encounter is supposed to take place. We preferred a more physical approach.

We made BOFFERS.

We have even found a web site or two that details how to make a
boffer sword: http://bach.it.mh.se/~svh9339/rpg.html#weapons and
http://www.charm.net/~dagorhir/weapons/sword.html (note: instead of
using a camping ground pad, we like the pipe insulation that fits
right over the 3/4" pipe)

In essence, we made boffer swords with plastic PVC pipe surrounded by foam
pipe insulation and held in place by duct tape -- lots of duct tape!
Another key item is we carefully had fencing or sparring matches. By
themselves, these can be quite humorous. The basic rules are:

  1) No head hits (you hit someone in the head and youÆre out of the game),
  2) once a limb has been hit, itÆs out of the action -- an arm is held
behind the back, a leg is lifted and the person must hop around to move
(A variation to this for dark creatures is trolls might take two hits
to put a limb out of action, a giant three and so on.),
  3) once a killing hit has been made (to the abdomen or chest) no more hits
     are allowed to that person.
  4) no fighting anyone with a camera

Note: This is a critical time for referees to keep careful watch of what
is happening.

DRAGON BATTLE
Dragon Battle is probably one area where Live-Action DragonRaid works
the best. Players fighting a dragon have to say WordRunes. Well, players
that survive a dragon encounter have to say WordRune. WordRunes can be said
at any time in a game (if the setting is appropriate) and then there is always

MIND SPEECH.
Mind Speech is the method of fighting dragons that usually does them in.
Of course æthemÆ refer to the LightRaiders or the Dragon. But it is usually
the deciding factor in dragon battle. When LightRaiders successfully refute
a dragonÆs æmind speechÆ they do damage to the dragon -- damage equal to their
Belt of Truth (which may have been increased for that encounter by a WordRune).

We have only tried this a few times, but weÆre encouraged to try some more.
We have spotted a public park or two that looks promising for an adventure.
WeÆll keep you updated as to how it goes...

Here's a group with some interesting artwork and sound to boot!
Ezekiel's Wheel describes themselves as the Home of
Retro-Progressive Christian Rock. More information available at:

This is a great site for a great album, but be warned!
It is graphic intensive! But you can find out about the
Newsboys and their latest album "Take Me To Your Leader" at
http://www.newsboys.com/newsboys/inside/index.html
(I wonder how you drive that car?).

We stumbled across this place by accident but thought it was a nice site.
We were also surprised when the owners name looked familiar as well! Here is

Here is a site that is quite packed with biblical studies. THere is an
alphabetical topical listing of studies to read.
We felt drawn to the study on the Armor of God at:
http://www.realtime.net/~wdoud/library/armor.html
but there are many other in-depth expositions at this site. You can also
sign up to receive email bible studies as they come out. They have done
or are doing bible courses on Ephesians, Hosea, Romans, Ruth and Titus.

"Creativity flourishes within the context of community.
Here are five points I've learned as an artist in the context of community..."

That teaser is from the web page Michael Card: The Artist & Community at
http://www.arthouse.org/card.html

We were impressed with the content -- after all DragonRaid implies much
about community and working together -- and also found the site to be
an interesting collection of Christians exploring art. There are some
excellent essays about art and this site.

LightRaider Net is an electronic newsletter for adventurers!

We discuss the DragonRaid (tm) game designed by Dick Wulf
(ftp://earth.usa.net/users/dragonraid), tell stories and experiences we have
had and talk about new adventure ideas. We also share what books and music and
graphics have inspired us and maybe what we have used to enhance learning.

We would like to hear from people who have played DragonRaid (tm). Reply to
this message or send email to cass@alaska.net to let us know that you want to
continue to receive the LightRaider NET. Feel free to forward it to anyone
you think would enjoy it!

A LightRaider is a strong and adventurous TwiceBorn who is sent out on
missions in the service of the OverLord of Many Names. If you have never
heard of LightRaiders, here is a good source to learn about them:
