Here is an interesting submission we received from: Jonathan Hayward
(our apologies for letting this site on the
bit shelf for so long). Jonathan describes some games he has
created. We've looked at The Minstrel's Song (and suspect that
Jonathan is a-not-so-secret Math Major!) and it looks intriguing.

Hello. My name is Jonathan Hayward, and I love to create. One of my
creations I believe may interest you.

I used to play Dungeons and Dragons, heavily. Then, after a time, I
came under conviction of the Holy Spirit that the game was not permissible
(in essence, because in playing it one committed in the heart actions
(magic, for instance) which should not be done in the hands, which goes
against Sermon on the Mount teachings of purity). At that time I let go
of what had become a very dear and precious hobby to me, expecting never
to role play again.

After that point, I slowly began to muse, "The evil I rejected was an evil
of pretending to use magic, commit murder, and so on; it was not an evil
innate to role play. What would a role playing game look like, designed
from the ground up according to Christian principle?"

And so I began to think, and ideas began to coalesce inside my head. I
had no idea if I would be able to complete the project, if it would be
workable and playable, if I would ever find people enough to play it...
but I began to work.

So an exposition of how a Christian role playing game would be set up
was written, and then a world, a realm with seven unique races, and then
introductions. When it was ready to playtest, I talked with my friends
until I found a few people who would be willing to try something uncertain
with me, and we played.

The campaign lasted a semester, ending shortly before my undergraduate
graduation, and was highly successful. And so I have put the materials
on my home page, both for the world, Espiriticthus, and the game,
The Minstrel's Song.

   Finally, brethren, whatever is true,
                      whatever is honorable,
                      whatever is just,
                      whatever is pure,
                      whatever is lovely,
                      whatever is gracious,
   if there is any excellence,
if there is anything worthy of praise,
   think about these things.

   Philippians 4:8, RSV

The Minstrel's Song is not allegorical as DragonRaid is. I have no
objection to allegory; I have simply taken another approach. It is
an investigation into what is good and pure, an attempt to provide a
recreational environment which sets before the player's minds what is
beautiful and desirable. I would encourage anyone who wants to see
what this is about is encouraged to read the cultures description --
which has been enjoyed not only as a tool to use in playing, but also
as literature in its own right which has received high praise. I
believe that players who have enjoyed DragonRaid will also enjoy The
Minstrel's Song, and find that it also helps them in their spiritual growth.

My home page is located at "http://www.imsa.edu/~jhayward/", and my e-mail
address is "jhayward@imsa.edu". The game materials at my home page are

Espiriticthus: Cultures of a Fantasy World not Touched
                        by Sin

   The Minstrel's Song: Player's Introduction
The Minstrel's Song: Game Master's Introduction
The Minstrel's Song: General Comments and
                                    Theological Groundings
   The Minstrel's Song: Further Notes
The Minstrel's Song: a Mathematical Model
                                    (strictly optional)

In addition to these materials, Espiriticthus: the Saga, chapters 4-7,
which are more or less a short story describing an adventure in the
world Espiriticthis, are available upon request. I would welcome any
comments and reactions that players would have to my material.

Thank you, and happy playing.

I would like to submit a song that was written by Taran upon returning
to the Liberated Lands from the LightRaider Test.

Song of Thanksgiving and Dedication to the OLMN
-for LightRaiders about to travel into the Dragon Lands

     The Overlord of Many Names
Has called us on a Raid
He's given to us all we need
And the blessing of His Name

Out from our safe Homeland we go
     Into the Dragon Lands
To face the foes that come our way
By the guiding of His hand

No matter where our journey leads
Whether in the night or day
His strength we seek, His Words we speak
As we journey on our way

And if perchance our lives are claimed
     In service to the Lord
A better Home we'll journey to
And then gain the Great Reward

Take care and may God be with you and bless you!

     In Christ,
     David Staley

"A tourist is one who travels out of curiosity and idleness.
A pilgrim is someone who leaves home in search of
'elsewhere' which transforms him into someone else.
The pilgrim seeks a 'place of refuge' or, as the Celtic
Irish monks called it, a 'place of redemption.'"

Just to prove we don't fit in to any 'normal' box, we stray away
from the louder music we recommend last time to the haunting music
of Psalmus by Jeff Johnson.

If you are looking for even more variety, check out

has vast quantities of information about Contemporary Christian Music.

P.S. It goes real well as background music with Jonathan's medieval
story mentioned below!

We seem to have this tendency to highlight multiple aspects of a site.
Maybe because it's easier and faster for us, or maybe we just hang out
with multi-talented people!

In any case, here is a story that uses HTML. Well, maybe we should say
here's the beginning of a story that uses HTML -- we had trouble finding
the end of the story ... but it was enjoyable getting caught up in the
story. It's "A Woven Story" by the creator of The Minstrel's Song,
Jonathan Hayward and it's found at
http://www.imsa.edu/~jhayward/story/start.html

Enjoy! cb

LightRaider Net is an electronic newsletter for adventurers!

We discuss the DragonRaid (tm) game designed by Dick Wulf
(ftp://earth.usa.net/users/dragonraid), tell stories and experiences
we have had and talk about new adventure ideas. We also share what
books and music and graphics have inspired us and maybe what we have
used to enhance learning.

We would like to hear from people who have played DragonRaid (tm).
Reply to this message or send email to cass@alaska.net to let us know
