~ DR2: DragonRaid News!! ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lots of things are happening with DragonRaid these days!
For many years DragonRaid remained on the back burner with
little forward advancement, and its future looked unsure.
In the hearts of a few though, the hope of a 'rebirth' burned,
and through the wonders of the Internet, God answered the prayers
that were on the hearts of those few!
Recently, a group that originated out of the DragonRaid Mailing
List, organized themselves with some help and direction from
DragonRaid creator, Dick Wulf. Coming under the wing of The
Lamb's Bride Project ministry, this Leadership Group has
spearheaded the 'rebirth' so long desired.
The Leadership Group consists of the following:
DragonRaid Director: Jeff Smith --> thehold@mail.teleport.com
  Responsible for working with committees and other staff to
  help organize DragonRaid and help keep everything going smoothly.
Assistant DragonRaid Director:  Rich Sezov --> sezovr@voicenet.com
  Same responsibility as Director, steps in when the Director
  is unavailable, and supports the Director whenever possible.
Secretary:  John Dorman -- jdorman@juno.com
  Keeps track of all incoming emails for DragonRaid and maintains
  records (new people emails, chats, ect.).
DragonRaid Consultant:  Dick Wulf --> dickwulf@usa.net
  Provides advice where needed as the creator of DragonRaid.
Rules Committee Director:  Joe Revesz --> joerevesz@juno.com
  Maintains and organizes for rules improvements
  and new rules that the Rules Committee decides and works on.
Adventure Committee Director:  Jill Oviatt --> jillo@pobox.alaska.net
  Organizes and maintains the material that the Adventure committe
  works on.
Adventure Committee works on the development of Adventures,
  Word Runes, Character Roles, Art, Maps, Dark Creatures, Ect...
  (There can be several subdivisions under the Advenure Committee
  with one person representing each subdivision making up the
  Adventure Committee).
Playtesting Director:  Jack Ray --> jackray@earthlink.net
  Organizes, maintains records, and reports the results of
  playtesting back to the Committees on results of playtesting
  such as what works and does not work.
Communications Director:  Steven Carrington --> cass@alaska.net
  Handles communication on internet and snail mail
  and maintanence of Web and Ftp sites.
Marketing/Public Relations Liason:  David Staley --> DragonRaid@juno.com
  Handles the marketing of DragonRaid and dealing with the Public.
Feel free to contact any of the above with questions/comments
that you may have. We are looking forward to reports from these folks
as things progress!
The Group has made a commitment to market and distribute the
remaining Boxed Sets of DragonRaid to those who would use them
for the glory of Jesus Christ and the edification of His Church.
Also, much more is being worked on as well!
A DragonRaid 2nd Edition set is being worked on at this time!
Much of the discussion of this is occuring at this time on the
DragonRaid Mailing List, and you are encouraged to join in!
Also, many adventures are being worked on as well! With titles
such as; The County Faire, Schools of Destruction, Descent into
Darkness, Koindras!, and The Enemy Within, you can be assured
that there will not only be a lot of fun and challenge but many
teaching situations that will make your Adventure for Christ all
the more exciting!
Don't swim with a water troll!
From: Matthew Crandall Matman@ilnk.com
I had a player that liked to wander off from the group too.  Which not
only didn't promote group unity, but was a nightmare for me as AM too
because I had to constantly run two situations at the same time (one for
the group and one for him).  He recently learned his lesson in a simalar
manner.  THe group had been shipwrecked and was weathering a storm in a
cave off a river.  After making camp they explored the cave and
discovered it curved around in the darkness and dead ended with a large
pool on the floor of the cae.  This worried them because they knew there
were water trolls in the area.  This one character (Raadmond) decided
that he would stay the night next to the pool to watch.  The rest of the
part urged him not to but instead to come back to the cave enterance to
watch from there with the group.  He refused (another tragic case of
testosterone poisioning).  Anywho, he tried to stay up but falied his
Con check and the rest of the group awoke to his screams echoing down
the walls of the cave.  By the time they got back to Raadmond, he had
been slashed to ribbons (Water trolls are *really* nasty!) and was
dangling in the air (water trolls are also big and stong!), fighting to
stay concious, as the Water Troll used him as a living shield.  The
Water Troll demaned a ransom from the group to release Raadmond, which
they paid, (no material possession are worth the life of a fellow friend
and LightRaider) but then Raadmond got another surge of testosterone and
tried something foolish.  The troll had backed all the way up to the
pool by this time and was threatening to take Raadmond to a watery grave
when Raadmond (with 1 point of health and his arms pinned due to the way
he was being held) decided he would try to attack the troll by flicking
the still burning torch he was holding at the creature witha flick of
his wrist.  All he managed to accomplish was to toss the torch into the
pool and plunge the entire group into total darkness.  The next thing
heard was a *SPLASH* and by the time the NIGHTLIGHT WORDRUNES were up
and running, both Raadmond and the Troll were no where to be seen.  One
of the LightRaiders bravely dived into the pool (Never fight a water
Troll on his own turf!)  and managed to retrieve Raadmaond's body from
the canal where the troll had dropped him to drown as he made good his
escape.  Raadmond survived, but barely and was bed-ridden and useless
for 5 days as he recovered from his injuries.  He bacame entirely
dependant on the party and this helped relations a bit and he
certainally hasn't gone of on his own any more since then. (It's amazing
how a near-death experience changes your outlook on things!)
  Fantasy Literature and DragonRaid
     As I set the copy of "The Book of Three" down on the nightstand by my
     bed and turned out the light, I thought about the adventure I had just
     taken.  Indeed, it was as if I had been away for quite some time,
     traveling through the wondrous land of Prydain!  The interesting people
     and creatures I met, the places and things I had seen crossed through
     my mind as I stared into the black shadows clinging to the corners of
     my room.
     I began to wonder about why I am drawn to this type of book?  Also,
     because I am sure that most other DragonRaid users like fantasy books
     as well, I wondered what the relationship was between DragonRaid users
     and fantasy books?
     The answer to why I am drawn to this type of book can be pretty
     easily figured out.  I love the adventure and the excitement that
     almost always can be found in a fantasy book.  The fantastic settings
     and stories grip me and take me from the rigmarole of daily life.  I
     also like how lessons and thoughts impact me from a fictional fantasy
     story far more than from a more 'practical' book.  I would rather
     read an entire book like "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" to
     learn about the love of God than by reading a small pamphlet on the
     same subject.  Although the small pamphlet would be good, I know that
     I would walk away with more of a profound impact to my heart and mind
     that would certainly stay with me longer and be remembered more
     clearly from Lewis' masterpiece.
     What is the connection between fantasy literature and DragonRaid users?
     Well, the first thing that comes to mind is that DragonRaid is almost
     like a great fantasy book.  Indeed, it is influenced, in part, by the
     works of people like Lewis and Bunyan whose allegorical fantasy is
     considered to be Classics.  I am sure that this is part of the
     relationship, but I also think that it goes deeper.
     The backdrop to the world of EdenAgain has many of the same allegorical
     elements as authors like Lewis, Tolkien, and others, although much more
     straight forward and evangelical.  It is on this canvas that the
     imagination can enjoy and the mind can learn.  It is on this canvas
     where DragonRaid's RPG aspects come into play.
     One thought that comes to my mind is, how many have read a fantasy book
     and desired to break the constraints of the typed words and roam around
     the countryside or explore a corridor of the castle that the characters
     in the story just 'passed by'?  DragonRaid provides a platform to enter
     into a good fantasy story and experience it first hand and not be
     constrained by the pages of a book.  Although DragonRaid is designed to
     convey specific teaching lessons within its adventures, and is not
     totally open ended like other RPG systems, there is plenty of room for a
     players character to 'live and breathe'.
     I also began to wonder how could the reading of such books help to
     inspire adventures and supplements and liven up DragonRaid groups?
     The possibilities for inspiration are almost unlimited in my
     opinion.  There is such a wide variety of books out there that
     there should be no worry about lack of material.  Many great books
     have many sections inspired from earlier great books, and I am sure
     that DragonRaid adventures could really benefit from these books
     too.  Reading great fantasy books can stimulate the imagination
     that can help to provide AM's with some lively characters and
     colorful situations to liven up their groups enjoyment and experience
     with DragonRaid.
     I believe that the more the players can become a part of the
     DragonRaid "learning System", and involved in the adventures story,
     the more productive the ministry will become.  There will be times
     where it will be practical to 'halt' the adventure for a more focused
     teaching session, but if the story portion of DragonRaid is
     consistently high, I am sure that these 'halting' sessions won't be
     viewed as boring or forced, but will help to enhance the DragonRaid
     experience even more.
     I would strongly suggest going back to those books that you loved
     when you were young (or not so young) and reread them again.  Let
     the simple lessons the author is teaching sink in and teach you how
     to use allegory and a good storyline to enhance the DragonRaid
     learning experience.  Players too may find it easier to get into the
     adventures more with some exposure to this genre of books as well.  I
     think a deep well of inspiration awaits us all in those dusty books.
     I hope to be writing articles in the future dealing with other topics
     on literature and DragonRaid.  About how they can complement one another
     as well as their individual benefits.  I hope that you will enjoy them
     as much as I enjoy thinking them up.
     I would also encourage you to stop by and visit a site that I
     maintain called, "The Book Shop".  Drop in and read some casual
     reviews about some good books, and feel free to share about some
     books that you enjoy too!  The Book Shop URL is:
