Faulty Files

If you're here, then that means that your background file isn't displaying properly when you click on its name in your GeoCities directory. Follow the steps below to fix the problem.

  1. Is your graphic a GIF or JPG file? No matter what your answer, make sure you read #2 to make sure it really is GIF or JPG.

  2. No other file types will work. If you want to use a graphic but it's another file type, you must use a graphics program (such as Paint Shop Pro) to convert it to GIF or JPG. Simply renaming a file to GIF or JPG will never work. If you've successfully converted your graphic, go back and continue on at #2.

  3. Can you open and view your graphic from your hard drive? Go into your browser and select the File menu, then "Open..." or "Open File in Browser," depending on which browser you're using. Browse to find your background graphic. Open it up in your browser. Will it display? If yes, go to #4. If not, you've probably got a corrupted file. There isn't much you can do for that. All you can do is make or find a different background graphic. (I suggest you take a look at the free, customizable images at The Background Mold.)

  4. Try uploading the file again. Sometimes there are errors when the file is uploaded. Does it work when you click on it in your GeoCities directory now? If yes, go back and continue on at #2. If no, then you've probably done something wrong. (Make sure you've waited long enough for your upload to actually get into your directory. A good way of knowing when it's updated is to change the file name of your graphic. That way, when the new name shows up, you know that it's the new version. You can just rename it to the former name after it appears so it matches your HTML code.)
