Descendent of Evan Evans

Evan Evans, weaver and his wife, Ann lived at their bode Ponygarreg. Their only son to our knowledge was John W Evans b 1813 d 1901. His baptism was Sept 1, 1813 in Llanychairn, Carligan.

John W Evans ventured to the US in abt 1839. My family believes he came up to Cincinnati via the Mississippi River. Shortly after his arrival he married Mary Samuel in Cincinnati, OH. They made their home around Jackson OH and south toward Portsmouth. My family tells of his running a grist mill. Within a year of their marriage they begat John O Evans, a veteran of the Civil War's 6th cavalry unit. Later in life John W married Catherin Davies.

We also found a record of John W Evans in "History of Welsh Settlements" by Rev William Evans 1896: "Sardis Church: John Evans an officer of Sardis Church for some years is now in Venedocia." John W is buried in the cemetary near Venedocia at Landeck, OH with his daughter and son-in-law Dr David Davies and Elizabeth.

John O's civil war enlistment papers say he was born in Loveland OH. He married Jane N Jones, she grew up near Oak Hills at Washington Station, south of Jackson OH.

John O's favorite tale to the children was an event of the war. He would tell the grandchildren gathered round of the aftermath of the battle of Shiloh. His horse had been shot out from under him. Wounded, he lay still while Confederate Troops scoured the area for survivors. They happened upon John O and kicked him several times. When he failed to respond, they moved on to investigate other wounded. After the Confederate Troops moved away from the area John O walked back and rejoined his unit.

After the war, John O returned back to Jackson OH where he lived until his death with his son Charles O and his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Gertrude (Bess) Swyers.

The information on Evan and Ann Evans is from the National Library in Aberwrystwyth, Wales.

Questions about the Evans:

Who were the Evans' that came from Pittsburg to visit in abt 1925? My mother remembers playing with a Bernard Evans.

The children of Charles O grew up believing that John O was born in Pittsburg.
