The Seigfrieds |
Sebastian Seigfried was born in 1766. His parentage and birthplace are uncertain, but there is a clue. Heimatbuch Karavukova, a history of the Yugoslavian town where Sebastian lived, said the first Seigfried settler to Karavukova was Josef Seigfried, who arrived in 1764 from the neighboring town of Hodschag. Indeed, Ortsippenbuch Hodschag lists Josef and his family, but indicate he lived out his life there.Sebastian married Anna Bretmacher, whose birthdate and parents are also uncertain. Heimatbuch Karavukova said the first Bretmacher settler to Karavukova was Peter Brednacher, who emigrated from Morchingen Krs. Forbach in Lorraine, which is on the northern French border. Peter came to Karavukova by way of Vienna on May 2, 1766. It is very likely that this Peter was Anna's father.
Sebastian and Anna had at least four children between 1804 and 1819. Anna died sometime between 1820 and 1826, at which time Sebastian remarried to Anna Germann. Anna Germann, born in 1787, died August 11, 1827.
Sebastian died of cholera at the age of 70 on August 20, 1836 during a three-month long plague that hit Karavukova and claimed 54 lives.
The couple had one son, Balthasar Seigfried, who was born December 8, 1907 in Cleveland, Ohio. At some point, the couple moved to Barberton, Ohio. That's where young Barbara died of tuberculosis on February 19, 1909. Stephan later returned to Eastern Europe and married Barbara's sister, Elisabetha Zengraf. Stephan died during World War I, and fearing the same fate might befall his son, Elisabetha sent 17-year-old Balthasar back to the United States to avoid conscription. Balthasar married his cousin, Rose Schnitzler, and their descendants continue to reside in the Akron, Ohio area today.
Their children are:
Stephen George Seigfried, b. 5/19/1927
Rose Ann (Seigfried) Schleis, b. 9/17/1928
Joseph John Seigfried, b. 5/25/1931 d. 7/5/1983
Balthasar Peter Seigfried, b. 5/16/1936
Paul Anthony Seigfried, b. 9/5/1941
Nicholas Robert Seigfried, b. 12/22/1945
