| This 'new
sign' of the Zodiac has been around for over a millenium, as detailed
in CatherineTennants' books, The Lost Zodiac and The
Box of Stars.
The constellations of Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer or Serpent Charmer, who wrestles in the stars with the snake of medicine and rebirth, represents the Greek god of Healing, Asclepius. It is the 13th traditional Zodiac sign and it can be found between Scorpio and Sagitarious. Governed by Hans Sabik and , at the head of the Serpent Bearer, Ras Alhague. Sabik was believed by ancient astrologers to give moral courage and sincerity, while Alhague gave a reserved and thoughtful nature. It is a water sign and the sun is in this sign from 30 Nov until 17 Dec , although some sources say that the dates of Ophiuchus lasts only nine days and those are the first seven days of Sagittarius meaning those born under the new sign of Ophiuchus are also under the traditional sign of Sagittarius. Ophiuchus is the Medic, meaning that an Ophiuchan is a person who has an urge to help and comfort others though there is another half - the serpent - which is unfeeling and cold, giving a necessary detatchment if they are to cope with the sick and needy. The Ophiuchan shares their knowledge and give freely for the benefit of others. The Ophiuchan is a comforting person which is why other people like being associated with them. Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, has the symbol similar to the international symbol representing medical associations world-wide, a serpent coiled around a tree. Ophiuchus, entwined with the constellation of Serpens, covers a large expanse of the sky and is filled with points of interest, including some of the milky way's richer star clouds. Greek for serpent bearer, Ophiuchus is usually identified with Asclepius, the God of medicine. In one legend, Asclepius learned about the healing power of plants from a snake. His medical skills were so great that he could even raise the dead, which was a cause of concern to Hades, god of the underworld. He therefore persuaded Zeus, his brother, to strike Asclepius dead with a thunderbolt. Zeus then placed Asclepius in the sky, in recognition of his healing skills, along with Serpens, his serpent. There is a
story that Ophiuchus
is
Hercules, who slain a giant snake near the river Sagaris in Lybia. He is
also thought to be Triopas, who destroyed a temple of Ceres. He was punished
with hunger and finally with even that snake (or dragon) clinching
him permanently (Ap. Hyginus, Poeticon Astronomicum l.II.14).
