Thanks for an awesome and entertaining site on the greatest piece of cinematography of our time! I have yet another observation about the Baroness: Why, when she is standing on the balcony with the Captain, does she even bother to try to come up with something to give him as a wedding gift if she knows that, in her next breath, she's going to break off their engagement and advise him to pursue Maria? Maybe she, like Maria while she prays, just likes the sound of her own voice.

well, I never thought there'd be a place where I
could point out all the totally inconsistent
things about SOM that I have noticed in the 100+
times I have seen this movie, both as a child and
now as a mother of 5. Here it goes: Where did
Maria get that "pretty little thing" she was
wearing the night of the puppet show? The fabric
brought by the housekeeper for her to make clothes
was all subdued browns and greens. Is that
something a postulant nun is supposde to be
wearing anyway? If Baron Von Trapp hated the Nazis
so much, why did he invite Herr Zeller to his own
home for the party? When Maria leaves the VonTrapp
home during the party, how is she going to get to
the Abbey? She got there by bus; was there a bus
running in the middle of the night? Wasn't Max
waiting for her to be his "dinner guest?" Wouldn't
they have wondered where she was and gone out to
look for her and probably found her on the road?
Did the whole night go on before anybody realized
she left? Didn't the captain ask at all where
Maria was? If he had just been dancing so
intimately with her just shortly before her
departure, and they were "waiting" for her to have
dinner, would he not, being the noble man he was,
go out and find her and try to bring her back (and
maybe have another love scene or something)? If
the Nazis "knew everything about everyone" why
does Herr Zeller have to come to the theater to
ask Max when the Captain will be home? Why was
Herr Zeller so stupid to let them drive in the car
from their house to the theater by themselves,
with enough time to conjure up some kind of escape
plan on the way to the theater? How could Max, who
suddenly goes from car-pusher to MC of the
concert, have managed to MC the concert while
helping them over the border? Where was his car?
Wouldn't the evil butler have heard that car too?
If it was summertime, how could the concert start
so late? It must have been close to 10:00 when
they were pushing the car at their house (pitch
darK), so exactly when did this "evening" concert
begin? How could Max have been there to push the
car AND be in the town as MC of the concert at the
same time? How did Herr Zeller get a front-row
seat when he hadn't reserved a ticket? If they
were so heavily guarded, exactly how did they get
out of the theater? Why would the Von Trapps have
gone to the abbey after escaping from the concert,
if they simply could have headed to the hills of
Switzerland right away? Didn't they think they
would put the nuns in danger of dealing with
ruthless Nazi soldiers? And when they DID find
them, would not the nuns perhaps have been raped,
or at least beaten or some other atrocity? Why did
they need to "borrow the caretaker's car" if they
got to the abbey in the first place? Did they WALK
from the theater? And manage to get there in the 2
minutes or less they had before Herr Zeller was
told they "were gone?" Since Max was obviously
some kind of accomplice in the escape of the Von
Trapps from the theater, why wasn't he summararily
arrested and tortured? How was Max both MC of the
festival and talent scout/manager anyway? Wouldn't
that be conflict of interest? Why was Barron Von
Trap so stupid as to incite poor insecure Rolfe at
the abbey when he could have taken the gun and
ordered him into the car with them? How was he
going to get out of there unless he took him along
anyway? Did he expect to leave with Rolfe standing
there smiling? AND BTW, Rolfe has that stupid
Dobie Gillis fake blonde hair, and when Kirk hits
that high note, it's DUBBED in (very obviously).
AND BTW, just so you know, the solfege notes are
DO-RE-MI-FA(not "FAR")-SOL(not"SEW")-LA-

Although I enjoyed this article, I have a few complaints with what you wrote. #1-you say that the older children should be too old to be afraid of thunderstorms. WRONG!! I'm 25-years-old, a mother of 2, and I'm still a little frigntened of thunderstorms.
2-you ask why Gretl actually falls asleep during "SO Long, Farewell". Well, honey, to let you know, she didn't actually fall asleep. That was just in her routine.

Hi,
I came accross your page (about Sound of Music 'mistakes') when mum was
doind a Sound of Music search, and we both thought it was very funny. I
thought up a few more points that you might want to add -
1. At the dinner table (Maria's first night), why, when she talks about the
frog 'gift', does everybody - INCLUDING Liesel, Freiderich, Louise and
Kurt - start crying. Liesel etc would not cry over something like that.
And why does the Captain assume MARIA gave them indigestion? Wouldn't it be
them, or the food, if anything?
2. And, if you look carefully, sometimes you see Marta mouthing the words
of the songs she doesn't even know.
3. The children say that they don't even know how to sing. That was said
incorrectly. They should have said that they didn't know things like notes,
pitch etc. You can sing from the day you can start to talk, just not in
tune.
I hope that you might use these on your page.
P.S. Did you enjoy The Sound of Music?

I would like to point out more humorous absurdities regarding the movie
The Sound of Music.
1. The children ask when they are going to get another governess. Captain
then decides that this would be a good time to reveal his engagement with
the Baroness to the children. He prefaces what he has to say by responding
"There's not going to be a governess, anymore." Yet shortly afterward,
when Maria returns from the Abbey, he says "You are back to, uh, stay?"
(much to the Baroness' chagrin, I'm sure). Maria then says "Only until
arrangements can be made for another governess." Is the Baroness a nut,
or what? Its obvious the Captain wants to shag Maria, so why doesn't the
Baroness say anything?
2. When Maria is saying her prayers during the night rainstorm scene,
Leisl climbs in the window. Maria then looks out the window and says, "How
on earth did you get up here?" Leisl responds by saying she climbed up.
If you watch this scene closely, you'll notice that we can actually see
Leisl take about three steps as she walks toward the window (obviously they
are on a set), she doesn't even try to fake it by at least crawling up
to the window so we can't see her. Leisl also says that "Louisa can do
it with a whole jar of spiders in her hand!" I would hope so.
3. Since Max and the Baroness get along so well and always seem to be
sharing little secrets, why doesn't the Baroness try to marry him instead
of the Captain? The Baroness has said that she "... needs someone who needs
me desparately, or at least needs my money desparately." Max seems rather
shallow and has said "I like the way rich people live" and "I like the
way I live when I'm with them." So, why not hit on the Baronness?
4. When Maria takes the children on a picnic in the mountains, Maria
asks the children what songs they know. The children respond "We don't
know any songs, we don't even know how to sing." Yet just minutes earlier,
Leisl was belting out "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" with Rolf in the gazebo.
5. Why was Rolf so afraid to let Leisl touch him affectionately in the
gazebo scene? What was the deal with Rolf leading Leisl around the gazebo
like a circus monkey during the dance number?
6. Why was the Captain so rich? I thought he was just a captain in the
Austrian navy.
7. What did Max do for a living? I realize that according to him "I'm a
very charming sponge." But he wasn't that charming. Was he on some kind
of Austrian social assistance?
I have other observations, but this should do for now?
P.S. My wife is related to the real von Trapp's.

I just love the questions that your page asks of the characters but, I found it interesting that the one that I always question the most you failed to question, Max.
1)Who is Max? The children address him as Uncle Max but, for some reason I question if that is true. If he is their uncle which one? He couldn't be their mother's brother as the Captain wouldn't want him around but, it is obvious that he is not the Capta
n's brother otherwise, he would have known more about the Captain (see question #4) 2)Why does he always seem to be at the von Trapp's homestead or with one (or more) of them? Does he live there? And if he is really looking for new singers for the festiva
when does he scout them out...he is always with the von Trapps?!? 3)Doesn't Max have a car? I would expect him to have one if he mingles with the rich and famous but, he gets into the already overloaded von Trapp family car when the Nazis escort them to
he festival. 4) Why does Max enter the children into the festival? Does he not know when to expect the Captain and Maria back from their honeymoon or does he think that the Captain will change his mind about the children singing public? 5) Lastly, why w
uld Max ask Maria to the party? Wouldn't she have the responsibility of getting the younger children into bed? Would it be fitting for a Nunn to attend such a gala event? What would the guests think of a servant being invited to eat with them?!?
I have just as many questions about the Baroness but, I'll let you watch the movie again to come up with your own...

t tell you that I have also found a loving mistake of sorts in the movie. It's actually quite hard to miss...when the nuns are singing "How do you solve a problem like Maria", one of the lines happens to be, "I've even heard her singing in the abbey"...HE
LOooo what are they doing!! I just thought I should mention it even if you already new. So long, farewell...and all the rest

You know the scene where Maria comes back to the Abbey? Right before she comes in, there is a girl in a blue dress who is kneeling and being blessed by the Mother Abbess. Then M. Abbess says, "take our new postulant to the robing room" or something like t
at. This all leads to an explanation of the "blue dress" thing on the Maria page. You see, if you look closely, the dress Maria wears when she returns to the Von Trapps is the same dress that the postulant was wearing. They give it to Maria since the post
lant doesn't need it anymore, because she is now a nun, and Maria has already given all of her nice Von Trapp dresses to the poor. Ostensibly. (Although, why would she do that when it seems that she went back to the Abbey for about five minutes?) I know t
is because I played the new postulant in my school production of The Sound of Music, a role I won not because of my staggering dramatic talent, but because I'm the same size as the girl who played Maria. So now you know. But I love the Laendler page.

I don't think this page is "loving" at all. And I do not think that it is funny to insult the most beloved musical of all time. Even if that was not your intentions, you should have considered how other people would feel about this page! Not everyone like
to joke about good movies. I admit, Music is a bit saccherine, but what isn't? And all your questions about why this character does this, and so on.......do you ask a question like that every time someone says or does something unusual? I don't think so.
I will not be coming back to this page, and I'm sure others agree with me.

1) like you said, all their bikes are the same size, but Gretle(however you spell it) gets to ride on the back of Maria's.
2) Have you ever noticed that during the do-re-me scene, when the children are lightly bobbing up and down, Gretle(however you spell it) is bouncing out of control? Like, total whiplash.
3) This is the REALLY FUNNY thing. When the captain and Maria kiss, just after she burst into song, there is a moment or two when they look exactly like KISSING APES!!!!!!!!! I'm not lying, check it out!

The children tell Maria that they don't know how to sing, yet days before Liesl was singing rather profesionally with Rolph in the rotunda...shouldn't she have piped up claiming that she could sing? This would have made her exempt from the embarrassind Do

and one times.. but it wasn't until my friend pointed them out to me.
Note: Baronesses face during the party after the children sing the
"Goodbye song.
And then there's the look on the Captain's face during the
Landler. When Maria is standing behind him and she's suppose to bring
her hand up for him to hold... look at him wondering where the heck her
is hand is.

Your homepage was very nice. It is really good.
I was wondering how did u ever find the time to do all those things. It was wonderful. Very amazing. Maybe you can teach me how to make my own homepage. Please inform me if there are any new things at your webpage.

Congratulations and more power. I like "Sound of Music" very much, actually I just watched it a week ago and I kept on thinking where I could I get the lyrics. Good grief! You provided everything. Thanks a heap.
Looking forward to more exciting things.

I think your site is really great! Congrats for being featured in Yahoo! Internet's Life Yippee/Ya-Hooey section and for the various awards you have received. You deserve them, really! Your site is not only educational, it's also
very amusing! Especially the Kornik Korner. I really like that part. Anyway, more power to you and I hope more blessings and success to come. Take care and good luck!

Oh my Lord!!!! I love your "Laendler" page. That is awesome. I've noticed
all of those same things, having watched "The Sound of Music" at least 5000
times. I almost died laughing when I read all of your observations. Would
you please tell me exactly how this came about? Did other people help you
with it? I printed the whole thing out, and I'm keeping it.
