Here's the happy ending story of Nita, an African Pygmy Hedgehog that arrived at TLC in bad shape: ![]() ![]() photos by The Picture People, Louis Joliet Mall Out popped her little head, and then she slowly unfurled her body. That's when the shelter folks noticed her right front leg was blackened and stiff, and the area around her shoulder was terribly enlarged. Dr. Caffarini confirmed she had gangrene. Surgery had to be performed immediately or she would die in a few short days. So off came the leg. The shelter does not condone getting exotic animals as pets, and wishes pet shops would quit selling them because so little is known about their care. But Nita was already here and needed a home, and a home was found. As you can see, Nita is now doing just fine despite her handicap. She had to go back for more surgery on her leg, and then had to have teeth extracted when an x-ray of a swollen jaw revealed that half her jaw had disappeared!! Through it all Nita kept her sweet temper, and hearty appetite for mealworms. Thank you, T.L.C., for saving her life! ![]() ![]() Here's the happy ending story of Sarge, whose future family had originally come into the shelter to meet a different dog featured on the website: We were disappointed to find that Winnie, the dog we came in to see, was not well suited to very young children. However, we were directed towards Sarge. Sarge arrived at our home Saturday afternoon. He has since been on 2 2-mile walks, and has become more and more relaxed in our home. When my newborn boy was crying while I was trying to fix dinner, Sarge went to him and licked his hands. While rather slobbery, it did the trick!!! Funny dog, this Sarge!! These are a couple of Sunday morning shots of our family with Sarge. Sarge is great. He loves to fetch. One of the pictures shows one of his many balls. Thank-you again for the site you maintain. Your website brought Sarge to us!!! Thank-you for our gentle giant! Brenna Muncaster |
