Here's the happy ending story of Princess (formerly Susie):

"Striking a pose on the stairway."

Knowing that owning a dog is a lot of responsibility, my husband and I had put off getting a dog for about 12 years! However, our two daughters had become increasingly adamant that they were ready to have a dog. Because they were finally at an age where they could be truly helpful with a dog, my husband and I decided to just "look" at TLC Animal Shelter.

We saw Princess on our first visit. She wasn't the first dog we took outside. The first dog was cute, but the dog didn't really respond to us. We then took Princess outside. She was so timid. She was very cute, and she immediately tugged at my heart. I had an overwhelming urge to protect her! The shelter was calling her Suzie, but when we took her outside, she sat down, and daintily lifted up one paw. I held the paw, and said, "Well, aren't you a little Princess?", and the name just stuck. She really took to us. We visited her a couple of days later (still just my husband and I), and when we left, I just couldn't stop thinking about her.

The man at the shelter told us that she was a Hurricane Katrina evacuee. Her owner was an elderly man who was now going into a nursing home. He said that she had traveled quite a bit prior to her arrival at the shelter in Homer Glen. That could explain why she was so timid.

After talking at home for quite some time about the additional responsibility that having a dog requires, we talked with our girls about getting a dog. Of course, they were so ready! We finally took our girls to the shelter to meet Princess. Princess responded to them immediately, and they fell instantly in love with her. We took her home with us that very evening, October 28, 2005. I think we really got lucky with Princess. She is so smart, and she is good both inside and outside the house. She loves to play in the backyard. She has a blue squeaky ball that is her favorite, and she is great at playing fetch. She also loves to play Frisbee. I took her to Beginner Obedience, and she came in 3rd in a class of about 20 other dogs! Of course, our daughters are thrilled that they finally have a dog!

We all love the new addition to our family, and I think she is the perfect dog for us.

Thanks for letting us share our own "Happy Ending".
