We have three dogs. Two of them were adopted from animal shelters and I used to work for an animal rescue group. These things leave me with very passionate feelings for all the shelters out there and all the people who work at them whether they are paid or they volunteer. The fourth grade student council led by teacher Donna McDonough at High Point Elementary School just completed a fundraiser for TLC Animal Shelter in Homer Glen. They decided to sell pawprints made of construction paper for 25 cents each. The pawprints were then hung on the classroom doors throughout the school.

The final total collected over a two week period was $650. I would like to say thank you to all the students and their families and the staff members that contributed to this great cause. It is really heartwarming to see how generous everyone was. If you are not familiar with TLC, let me tell you a little about them. The shelter is located at 13016 W.151st St., (708)301-1594, and their Web site is tlcanimalshelter.org. This facility is in their 33rd year of operation. Though this is not an overly large place, it is very clean and the animals are well cared for. Any donations they receive are greatly appreciated, for this is how they survive. They really appreciate receiving cash donations because that helps cover the costs of food, heat and veterinary care. However, they can also use throw rugs (used ones are just fine), cat litter (non-scoopable), paper towels and dog and cat toys, just to name a few (there is a complete list on their Web site). The Website is very easy to navigate and is beautifully done. It is updated every Friday, so by Friday evening you can go on there and see the updated pictures of adoptable animals.

I can't stress enough the financial support that is needed to keep the shelter going. A fine example would be the gas bill they received last week for $900 for only one month. They have two furnaces (one on each end of the building) to keep the animals warm enough. There is always a nice variety of animals to choose from. If you have an animal that you need to give up or a stray that you have found, you can call and they will take you by appointment to see if they can help you out.
