So Many Were Saved from Dire Straits

This winter has been one of the harshest we have faced in many years, complete with ice storms and temperatures that plummeted below zero. The media warned us not to go out unless it was absolutely necessary, due to the dangerously frigid temperatures. What were these people thinking, when it came to their poor pets? This is just a sampling of the many animals we have helped this winter that were in dire straits.

Monty (pictured left) had little to be happy about, he was kept outside 24/7. On the day we got the call about Monty the wind chill was -35 below. Even after the owners were reprimanded and ticketed for failing to provide Monty with proper care, the wife refused to allow Monty in the house. To avoid more citations they brought him to TLC. At first Monty was unsure of his new surroundings, but after we gave him a nice blanket to lay on, you could almost see him break into what looked like an appreciative smile.

Hershey the chocolate poodle didn't have it any better. His owners moved leaving Hershey behind. Thinking surely his family would be back, Hershey waited faithfully out in the cold. He had made a bed for himself out of a plastic bag that was filled with dried grass clippings trying to stay warm. Hershey's chances for survival were not looking good at that point in time. Had it not been for some kind people who spotted him, he certainly would not have survived. Things have changed for Hershey, some nice folks adopted him and have given him a wonderful home including his own cozy bed to sleep in.

Little Spider another abandonment case was left at a vets office with a severely shattered leg. His left hind leg was so severely mangled, it was beyond saving. The only viable option was to amputate the leg (as you can see in the picture below). The surgery went well, but the problem facing Spider was that nobody wanted to adopt the little three legged dog in the rural area where he was from, and the Clay County Humane Society is located. We wanted to help this brave little dog get adopted, so Sandi O'Brien (TLC's Webmistress) put out a plea via the TLC website. With several positive responses, Clay County volunteers Rosemary Campbell and Juanita Noye transported Spider to TLC, where a loving family was awaiting his arrival. It was a case of love at first sight, and Spider has a new family that is giving him plenty oflove!

The kitten pictured right was found shivering inside a dumpster that he had been thrown into. If someone had not heard his terrified cries, a tragic ending certainly would have befallen him. His fearful cries have changed into purrs of contentment in the arms of his new adopted family.

Thank you for your generosity. Your contributions were a Godsend, to so many animals brought to TLC. We were able to provide numerous cats and dogs the chance for a happy future, but even though so many were saved, there are many more animals out there in dire straits and in need ofTLC. It's an ongoing effort but with your help we can change their lives.

The Bertha Fund Helps Make Happy Endings Possible

The Bertha Fund has been a life saver to a multitude of animals throughout the years... animals that had more extensive health concerns. Sometimes litters of puppies and kittens that are brought to TLC have come from some very bad conditions, and are not always in the best of health. The Bertha Fund helps us in paying for the antibiotics and other medications needed to get these animals healthy. The time and money involved is it worth especially when it brings about a happy ending... A little puppy by the name of Enzo ( pictured below) was one of those cases.

The folIowing is the Happy ending story Enzo's family sent us:

I just wanted to let you know, Enzo, whom we got as a baby, is doing realIy well, and is a happy healthy playful puppy. He got realIy ill at first with pneumonia, worms and a nasty cough, but the staff at TLC worked reaIly hard to help get him well. I wanted to thank them so much for all the time and effort they put into taking care of him. Enzo is a really smart guy and listens really well. I attribute that to his sense of appreciation for all of the humans that helped him stay in this world so we could love him.

Thank you!
Becky, Tony and Family

Christmas Open House

HoHoHo!

This year's open house was extra special! Randy Johnson who has an in with Santa Claus, got the jolly fella to make a special appearance at TLC's Christmas Open House along with Santa's buddy Ozzie the Golden Retriever who is also part of the VIP group. The stockings the animals had hung with care were filled with goodies brought in by so many kind hearted people, It was an enjoyable afternoon for one and all. We also want to thank Amy, Lisa and Mary Ann Lukas, Judy Kunkel, Annie Coleman, Josh and Michelle Chalifoux who made sure everyone had a good time.

A Special Thanks to:
the Alex and Kip Foundation for their generous grant to help the animals at TLC we really appreciate it. And we also wish to extend a special thanks to the Joyce Hewes Dennehy Charitable Fund for their generous grants to the TLC Animal Shelter this year. These funds have helped us immensely in providing care for the animals.

YIKES!

Postage costs how much? YlKES! With postage rates skyrocketing, just as with everything else, we are trying to cut costs in order to save money needed to help the animals. We hope that you know that we appreciate your donation, but if your canceled check is sufficient please check the box on the return envelope, that says no acknowledgement necessary. Every penny saved is just more money that we can use to help the animals!
