Shelter News from Shorty the Cat's Point of View (the cat about town)

Shorty's Dilemma, paper wads and 52 pick up

Hi!
"Shorty, this is not the time to be shooting hoops with Sam. We're running late getting the newsletter to the printer, and we will be missing our deadline because your column isn't done. Take a look at this place, there's wadded up paper all over the floor!"
Oh those paper wads are the ones that Sam missed trying to make a slam dunk into the wastebasket with her nose. She's getting better though.
"That's just great! You sit there wadding up paper into balls, while Sam looks like a seal balancing them on the end of her nose."
She's getting pretty good at that, don't you think?
"UGH! What you need to do is work on your column."
That's just it, I am working on my column! I've been working on it all week, and the wadded up paper you see, represents the end results of my hard efforts. Nothing I wrote sounded right, so I scrapped everything.
"Shorty, how about someone else writing the column for you this time, sort of like a ghost writer?"
A ghost writer, that sounds spooky!
No Sam, not that kind of ghost. It means someone else would write my column but I would take credit for it, I just don't feel right about doing that.
If you are out of ideas you can tell everyone how the dogs cleaned house in the Silly Pet Tricks Competition at this years walkathon. WooHoo! Dogs may have drooled, but they certainly ruled that day!
Good grief! I knew you were going to say something like that. Sam, basically we let you win, the other cats and I were far too sophisticated to enter a contest for top drooler... YUCH!
There were other events you guys could have entered like the waggingest tail event.
Sam, the only time cats wag our tails is when we're angry or annoyed.
Shorty are you angry?
No, I'm not angry, what made you ask that?
Your tail is wagging.
I am NOT angry!
Then you must be annoyed.
I am NOT annoyed.
Shorty, I hope you're not annoyed or angry with me, Slurrrp.
Yuch! Samantha! Dog kisses!
See you are mad, you never call me Samantha.
Sam I'm not mad, but one more of those slurpy dog kisses and I will be.
Sorry Shorty.
That's okay as long as you don't do it again, it makes me feel like I just had a bath. Now let me tell our friends about TLC's 2007 calendar.
Shorty, I thought that was supposed to be kept top secret.
No Sam, it's just the voting that is being kept top secret. I didn't realize the photo contest for the calendar would take off the way it has with over 200 entrants! I'm glad I'm not judging, purrrsonally I think every entry is a winner, and just wait until you see the front cover that Sandi O'Brien and Clare Paskiet worked so hard on. The premise of the photo shoot for the cover was to be a mythical one that supposedly was conjured up in Sam's dream. Princess Stinky was in all of her finery, Majestic Sully played the King, Merlin portrayed the Magician, and Tiny was the colorful court jester. That's me pictured as the the White Knight. If I must say so myself I make a handsome sight. I better remind our friends that there is still time to vote for your favorite. You can vote on line, by mail or stop in at the shelter. It's $1.00 per vote and all the money raised will help the animals at the TLC. The voting is being closely monitored by Igor so there will be no stuffing of the ballot box, and I can attest to the fact that Igor does NOT take kindly to vote fraud. See you at the TLC polls, and may the best cat win!
"Shorty!"
Oops I meant to say may the best critter win. Anyway the calendars will be available for sale at the craft show, or be picked up at the shelter for $15.00 each. Your calendar purchase helps the shelter and looking at all those "stars" will brighten your day (Especially when you look at the picture of me).
Before I forget, the Texas Hold 'Em Poker event is November 17th. We will need volunteers for the event. Sam and I were both going to be dealers, but paws are good for many things except for dealing cards. Our attempts were more like the game "52 pick up". We sure could use a helping hand! If you can help give us a call 708-301-1594, it should be a fun evening.

Love,

Shorty

PS
If anyone wants to bake a big tray of cookies for the event that would be great! And a side plate for Sam and me would be even better.

"Shorty!"
Uhoh, I gotta run!

COMPLIMENTARY REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED!

Even Santa Needs a Little Help, and So Do We.

We're calling on all TLC "elves" to help make this event a success!

The reason why TLC's craft show is so unique, is due to the fact that all the items for the sale are donated by wonderful folks who want to help the shelter. We are seeking donations of craft items and baked goods to make this event a huge success.

If you will be donating items for the sale, please bring the items to the Shelter between November 7th through November 10th or better yet, you can bring the items to the Homer Township Hall on Friday November 10th between the hours of 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M., when we will be setting up. If you prefer to bring your donations the day of the sale please have them at the Homer Township Hall at 9:30 A.M.

Please have items prepriced and bakery labeled. (Especially if someone has a food allergy and so nobody has to guess if it is apple or peach)

Helpful Tip!

To save yourself time and energy during the busy holidays, purchase extra bakery at the sale and freeze it. When friends and relatives drop by you'll have delicious homemade bakery to serve, without going through all the work!

Cars Aren't the Only Things Sold for Their Parts

SKULL: exposed to extremely high levels of radiation in irradiation studies
BRAIN: used in sleep deprivation studies
EYES: stitched shut to simulate blindness also chemicals placed in eyes to see if they will cause blindness
VOCAL CORDS: often severed to prevent the animals from barking or crying out in pain
LUNGS: continuously filled with cigarette smoke to induce cancer
HEART: forcibly stopped so medical students can practice resuscitating it
LIVER: alcohol force fed to induce cirrhosis of the liver
NERVOUS SYSTEM: poisons force fed into mouth to observe painful reactions and death
SKIN: badly burned in infection experiment

If you find a stray cat or dog, or know of someone who has to place a pet, or an entire litter, please don't give these animals to just anybody. Other people have and deeply regretted it. Avoid placing ads that say "free to good home." Those words are just right for those who pick up animals to sell to research labs. These individuals don't want to pay anything for an animal, because it will cut into their profit! NEVER give an entire litter to someone who just happens to come to your door. You may be rid of the work and expense of caring for a litter of kittens or puppies, but you won't be rid of the worry over what became of them.

Knowing how much you love animals, we think it is better that you are forewarned, before it is too late. Animals depend on us to do what is right for them. Don't let those trusting eyes down, or the purr you hear, or the tail you see wag, as he trustingly walks down the sidewalk to go to his "new home".

Saturday Night Cruise Nights Raise Funds for TLC Critters

We wish to thank Barb and Ted, Sharen and John and the members of the Lemont Classic Car Club for holding a fundraiser for TLC during their Saturday Cruise Nights. They held split the pots, raffles, and displayed a big donation jar to encourage people to help raise money for TLC. People enjoyed viewing the restored cars from the past, and oohing and ahhing over them, As you can see Sully TLC's good will ambassador enjoyed the event too!

Items needed for EBAY

A special thanks to Brandy Gergescz for running the shelter's Ebay shop. Even with new baby Olivia and 3 year old Jaden and a job and household to run Brandy still finds time to help raise money for the shelter through Ebay sales. Brandy is running out of items though, and said we should put a call out for items. The items need to be in good condition worth at least $50.00 and not huge since Brandy has to pack and ship the items. What better way to get rid of items you have been storing and you'll be helping the animals at the same time.

Great job Brandy

VIP MEMBERS TEACHING KIDS ABOUT ANIMAL SAFETY

VIP Members Judy Kunkel and Princess Stinky, Annie Coleman, Kathy Przybyla and Pal, and Joan Wick and Shane volunteered to teach children about how to behave safely around animals at the Lemont Safety Village. It is a known fact that children are bitten by animals more than any other age group. A good number of these incidences could be avoided, if children only knew how to act around animals, especially animals that are not familiar with the child. This has been a yearly event for VIP members, and we want to thank them for a job welI done.
