Shelter News from Shorty the Cat's Point of View (the cat about town)

It was a Blooming Success, but where's the catnip?

Hi!
Things were bustling at the shelter as Sandi O'Brien, prepared for TLC's first plant sale. Sandi got everything lined up, so I didn't have to lift a paw!
A few weeks before the sale several boxes arrived from Darlene Novak of Lowell Michigan, for the sale. Eagerly we waited to see what was inside each box, and could hardly wait for them to be opened. Each box contained a different garden decoration for the sale, which delighted our people friends. As for Tiny and me, our job was to climb inside each box to check that they were empty, and in so doing, we found the boxes to be a nice place to take a nap, snuggled in the cushy packing material.
Now the real work would begin. There was a wide array of plants ready to be sorted, and priced, which I could see would be a time consuming job. Wanting to lighten the work load, Tiny and I decided we could help out. I heard Sandi say something about trimming some of the leaves off a few of the plants, that had gotten crimped in transport. That job sounded simple enough, so Tiny and I followed suit. Tiny would take a bite out of this one and I would take a bite out of another. I thought we were doing a pretty good trimming job. Out of the corner of her eye Sandi noticed the trimming job we had done on several of the plants. Suddenly her eyes widened and her jaw dropped, as she looked at our work. I assumed she had that look on her face, because she had never seen a trimming job as good as we had done in her entire life ..... Wrong. All I heard was "Shorty!" Before Sandi could utter another word, Dan asked if the plants might need watering. At the same precise moment Denny walked into the room with King. King, thinking he could be of help, was more than ready and willing to water the plants. Sandi gave King, the evil eye! Seeing the look on her face, King backed up quickly and was only too glad to get back into his kennel .... so much for King's help!
When it got close to the sale date Kat Tempinski and Sharry Cernuda picked up plants that were donated by Reliable Nurseries in Lockport, Jim Melka Landscaping and Garden Center in Mokena, A Touch of Green Nursery in Homer Glen who donated generously and the Fields for their very generous donation. Kat and Sharry also picked up Gift certificates from Alsip Nursery in Frankfort and another one from Green Glen Garden Center in Joliet. Tiny and I wanted to go along for the ride, but when Sharry and Kat heard how we had helped trim the plants, they decided they could handle the job without our help. Humph!
Sandi had a lot of good help on Friday and Saturday, so I decided the best thing for me to do was oversee things from a more cushy vantage point. On Friday with help from Donna Holous, Kat Tempinski, Sharry Cernuda, Annie Coleman, Joni Futterer, and Leslee Ala, Sandi got the plants in and filled the tables. Helping Sandi sell and restock the tables on the day of the sale were Donna Holous, Sarah Ahlberg, Collette Walker, Rosemary Webster, Carol Migalski, Kristina Heinze, Joni Futterer, Sharry Cernuda, Kat Tempinski and Kat's daughter. The Girl Scouts, Lanaea Malak, Bre Malak, Cassandra Schifflet, and Katie Washagan along with their troop leader Jackie Baldyga and Co-Leader Laura Malak from Troop #590 also asked if they could help, and besides decorating flower pots for the sale, they did a wonderful job of helping carry out customers purchases. The only thing the scouts forgot to bring was Girl Scout Cookies! Drats!

"Shorty, after all it was a plant sale not a bake sale."
Hmmmmm you're right, we could add a bake sale to the event next year!
"Shorty is that all you can think about is food?"
Food is not the only thing on my mind, where were all the cat nip plants? Look at the list of people and organizations who donated plants, the Lemont Friendship Garden Club, the Mokena Garden Club, Dimitrea and Cassandra Shifflet, Elaine Tryjefczka, Sue Voelz, Jeanne Maack, Kathy Pryzybyla, Rosemary Webster, Elizabeth Hossa, Joni Futterer, Collette Walker, Sharon Hager, Annie Coleman, Donna Holous, Service Unit #24 Troops 171 and 590, Jackie Baldvga, Karen Washagan, Sandi O'Brien and Janine Carter. All these generous people but ......no cat nip!
"Shorty!"
I am just making a plant request like several other people did for next year.
I noticed you were not at the clean up after the sale and Parnell O'Brien, Casey Carter, Keith Miller, Caitie and Sue Kerfin stepped in to help out. I was there under cover making sure Sandi was safe as she counted the money. After all the sale brought in $1,725.00!

"That was certainly a terrific sale! But Shorty what would you have done if someone did come in to take the money?"
Send Sam in of course, she would slime them to death! Like I always say, dogs drool, cats rule. I'm the brains and she's the brawn!

Love,

Shorty

P.S.,
See you at the spaghetti luncheon on July 30th! I volunteered to help serve. One for you and one for me...

The real winners at the animals at TLC! The money raised will help us provide for so many animals in need - Thanks!

Casey's Pet Project!
We normally award TLC's "Golden Paw" to children who have done something special to help the animals at TLC. But we think we should make an exception to the rule and include Casey Marie Rinke who happens to be a Golden Retriever!
Every year the Old Quarry Middle School in Lemont holds a Student/Faculty Basketball game for family fun and entertainment, which also raises money for local charities. Casey lives with Laura Hawk-Richardson, who is a science teacher at the school, and organizer of the event. Some of the nights highlights were the cheerleading squads, dance team, faculty cheerleaders, the OQMS choir, and of course the athletes.
To raise money for the animals at TLC, Casey had her own donation box, and collected donations during Friday's lunch prior to the game. In all Casey collected $300.00, to help her animal friends at TLC while they await new homes.
The packed house cheered for both the students and the faculty. The game was intense, and as the plays were called, all eyes were on the Head Referee ..... Casey. Casey kept her eyes glued to the court, and didn't miss a play. Although Casey sat by the faculty bench, her calls were always unbiased. As it turned out the exciting game ended in a tie score.
A special thanks to Casey and to Laura for their pet project which we feel well deserves a "Golden Paw" Award.
We also want to thank Mary Kay Wolf for the great picture of Head Ref Casey consulting with her crew at the Student/Faculty Basketball game.
