The History Of Chocolate Chip Cookies
In the kitchen of a Whitman Massachusetts country inn, the first chocolate chip
cookie emerged in 1937. Simple experiments led to a recipe combining bits of chocolate
candy with a kind of butter cookie cookie dough resulting in a delicious mixture that
offered the crunchiness of a cookie with a taste of chocolate candy in every bite.
Obviously the cookies were a hit at the inn and wherever else the recipe spread.
This luscious cookie from
the New England Toll House, Whitman, Mass., enjoyed
immediate and continued popularity. It was introduced to homemakers in 1939
on Betty Crocker's radio series "Famous Foods From Famous Places.
Chocolate chip cookies have remained an American homemade treat ever since.
Easy Chocolate Chip Cookies
1/2 cup butter or margarine, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 egg, 2 cups Bisquick
1/2 cup chopped nuts, 1 pkg. (6oz.) semi-sweet chocolate pieces
Heat oven to 375. Mix butter, sugar, and egg together. Stir in Bisquick, nuts &
chocolate pieces. Drop teaspoonfuls of dough about 2" apart on ungreased
baking sheet. Bake about 10 minutes, or until lightly browned.
Makes 4 dozen 1 1/2" cookies.
Chocolate Chip Cookies
2,3 cup shortening (part butter or margarine), 1,2 cup granulated sugar,
1/2 cup brown sugar (Packed), 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 1/2 cups flour,
1/2 tsp. soda, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/2 cup chopped nuts,
1 pkg. (6 oz.) semi-chocolate pieces (1 cup)
Heat oven to 375. Mix shortening, sugars, egg & vanilla thoroughly.
Mix in flour, soda & salt, blend in. Mix in nuts & chocolate pieces.
Drop rounded teaspoons of dough about 2 " apart on ungreased
baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until delicayely browned.
(Cookies should be soft.) Cool slightly before removing from
Baking sheet. Makes 4 to 5 dozen 2" cookies
Chocolate Chip Bars
Make dough for Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe above - except
spread in greased oblong pan, 13x9 1/2x2". Bake in
375 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Makes 48 bars
Surprise Cookies
Make dough for Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe above - except
use 1 14/ cups chocolate-covered raisins or chololate-covered
peanuts in place of choloate pieces.
Chocolate Chip Pepperment Cookies
Make dough for Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe above - except
add 1/2 cup crushed pepperment-stick candy.
