          ~ Doctors' Statement Announcing Diana's Death ~

          PARIS (AFP) ~ The following is the official text signed by doctors Bruno Rioux and Philippe Pavie at the Paris' Pitie Salpetriere hospital on the cause of death:

          "The Princess of Wales was the victim of a high speed car crash tonight in Paris. She was immediately taken by the Paris SAMU emergency services which carried out initial resuscitation

          "On her arrival at Pitie Salpetriere hospital, she had massive chest injuries and hemorrhaging, followed rapidly by cardiac arrest.

          "An emergency thoracectomy revealed a major wound on the left pulmonary vein.

          "Despite closing this wound and two hours of external and then internal cardiac massage, circulation could not be reestablished and death occurred at 4 o'clock in the morning."

          Buckingham Palace has confirmed the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

          The Queen and the Prince of Wales are deeply shocked and distressed by this terrible news.

          Other members of the Royal family are being informed.

          Details of the funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed.

          The Prince of Wales has been spending this morning with the Princes at Balmoral.

          The Prince of Wales will fly to Paris later today to accompany back to the UK the body of Diana, Princess of Wales.

          He will be accompanied by the Princess's two sisters.

          ~ Media Facility - Note To Editors ~

          BUCKINGHAM PALACE ~ 31 August 1997

          There will be an open non-rota media facility at RAF Northolt for the arrival back in the UK at 1900 hours aboard a Royal Squadron aircraft of the coffin of Diana, Princess of Wales.

          ~ Closure Of State Palaces To The Public ~

          BUCKINGHAM PALACE ~ 31 August 1997

          As a result of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Buckingham Palace State Rooms, Windsor Castle, the Palace of Holyrood House and the Sandringham Estate were closed to visitors today and will, in addition, remain closed tomorrow, Monday, September 1st, and on the day of the funeral.
