The rest of the known information comes from Frank Chilton.
My G-Grandfather, Joshua Chilton had five brothers. The four older brothers were born in Loudon County, Virginia. The two youngest brothers, Joshua, my GG-Grandfather, and Mathias were born in Tennessee. I have four of the brothers traced fairly well. I have very little on Palatiah and Mathias.
As far as I have been able to determine, when the brothers moved to Illinois, prior to 1810, Palatiah stayed in Tennessee. The other five brothers, Augustus (Augustin), William, Thomas, Joshua and Mathias, were listed in the 1810 Illinois Census as "SHELTON."
William and Mathias, along with Joshua, had gone to Wisconsin around 1835 and were there in the 1840's. William's children had all been born in Illinois. To my knowledge, they all returned to Illinois except Mary and she went to Missouri with her husband and family. When William's wife and son, James, died, he went to Missouri to live with Mary. They show up in Platte Township, Andrew County, Missouri in the 1860 census and Grant Township, Nodaway County in the 1870 census. William died the following year in 1871.
The Augustus Chilton in the 1850 Illinois census is William's son. Augustus married Charlotte St. John. He was named after William's older brother, Augustus (Augustin) who died in Illinois in 1817 in the Chilton Fort.
