Philip Crist

Frederick Crist was born in Perry County in 1800. He and his wife, Mary A. Lones, purchased a farm in southern Licking Township, March 15, 1835. They were the parents of eight children, three of whom died in infancy. The five named: Elizabeth, Levi, Rebecca, Solomon and John, all married partners in a radius of five miles of their home.

Frederick Crist, sisters, Christina, Sarah, and Elizabeth and brothers, Jocob, John, William and Phillip were the children of W. Phillip Conrad Crist and Ann Butts Crist. W. Phillip Crist immigrated to Philadelphia from Dusseldorf, Germany about 1767 or earlier, and he served in General George Washington's Continental Army from the beginning to Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in October 1781.

For his service he was partly paid in Government Script (Red dog money). Becoming discouraged at not being able to turn the Script into anything of value, he burned it. Years later, when the Federal Government got going, the paper script was redeemed!

A sail-ship bound for America was boarded by W. Phillip C. Crist when he was about fourteen years of age. In those days a voyage required sixty days or more, a long time to get hungry. He was discovered on shipboard and to pay for his transportation the ship captain sold him into bondage to a weaver. He had learned weaving from his father, who was also a weaver. When Great Britain threatened the Colonies the employer told W. P. Crist that if he would join General Washinigton's Army he would give him freedom, and he did.

John H. Crist, son of Frederick and Mary A. Crist was born January 18, 1843, at the family residence in Licking Township south of Jacksontown. He went to Pleasantville, Ohio to get high school education. He was a member of the district School Board, school teacher for several terms and Township Trustee. He married Florence Nightengale (Cherry) December 25, 1885. They were the parents of Stanley F., A Louisa, W. Frank, John Bryant and Claude C. Crist.

Claude C. Crist was born November 5, 1897 on the family farm on Cristland Hill Road, Licking township bordering Buckeye Lake. Viola M. (Weekley) became his wife January 5, 1923 and are parents of Claude Cherry Christ, Jr., born 1929 and was a Korean veteran. Fred Phillip, born 1931, a U.S. Air Force veteran of 21 1/2 years, Frank R. born 1932 and Vera V. (Lepinskie) Crist born 1934.

Note: Wilhelm could not have been born in March of 1791 as implied. It would be almost impossible with Daniel being born only 7 months earlier. His headstone has the year of birth as 1792 which would seem to be more accurate.
