This indenture made this thirteenth day of
September Anno: Dom: one thousand seven hundred and eighty five
and in the ninth year of our Independence .
Witnesseth that Lewis Duvall and Terisia Duvall his wife of the One Part
and John Crumpton of the Other Part of the state and county aforesaid
have agreed as follows viz. That for and in consideration of five shillings
in hand paid by the said John Crumpton unto the said Lewis Duvall and
Terisia Duvall his wife. The receipt whereof is acknowledged by the
said Lewis Duvall and Teresia his wife. Hath bargained and sold and
hereby hath bargained and sold unto the said John Crumpton that ______
Tenement or tract of land containing two hundred acres originally
granted to Lewis Duvall the thirteenth of July Anno Domini 1770 and in the
tenth year of the Reign of his majesty King George the Third, by the Hon.
Lieut. Governor William Bull lying and being in Craven County. On a
branch of Enoree called Duncan Creek. On the south side of Broad
River bounding on all sides by vacant land. It being originally Laid out for
John Harper, and hath such shape form and marks As the plat more fully
shows, at large
Together with all the Riversion and Riversions Remainder and
Remainders Rents issues and profits thereof and all and singular the
premises and appurtenances thereunto belonging To have and to hold,
the said _____ of land or tenements hereditaments and premises above
mentioned and every part and parcel thereof with every of their
appurtenances unto the said tract of two hundred acres of land in any wise
appertaining or belonging unto the said John Crumpton his heirs and
assigns for ever from the day Next before the day of the date of these
presents for and during and unto the full end and term of one whole year
from next ensuing and fully to be complete and ended yielding and
paying therefore unto the said Lewis Duvall and Teresia his wife Rent of
one pepper corn on the last day of said term of the same shall be lawfully
demanded. To the intent that by these presents and by force of the statute
for transferring of uses into Possessions of all and singular the premises
thereof to him and his heirs and to the only one proper use of possession
of him the said John Crumpton may be enabled to take and except
(accept) or grant and release, and forthwith or further be in the actual
possession of all and singular the premises thereof to him and his heirs
and to the only proper use and behalf of him the said John Crumpton his
heirs and assigns for ever-

This indenture made this thirteenth day of September Anno. Dom:
One thousand seven hundred Eighty five and in the ninth year of our
independence-
Witnesseth that Lewis Devall and Teresia Devall his wife of the One Part
and John Crumpton of the other part -
Witnesseth that for and in Consideration of the sum of four hundred pounds
old currency in hand well and Freely Paid unto the said Lewis Devall and
Teresia Devall his wife by the said John Crumpton at or before the sealing
and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged he the said Lewis Devall and Teresia Devall his wife hath
granted Bargained Sold Aliened Released and Confirmed and by these
presents do fully freely and absolutely grant bargain sell alien release
and confirm unto the said John Compton in his actual possession now
being by virtue of a bargain and sale to him thereof made for one whole
year by indenture of Lease dated the next before the day of the date of the
presents, and by force of the statute for transferring of uses into
possessions and to his heirs and assigns forever, all that ______ tenement
or tract of land Containing two hundred acres Originally granted to Lewis
Devall by his Excellency the Honorable William Bull, Esq. Lieut.
Governor ______ the thirteenth of July Anno:Dom: 1770 recorded in the
auditors office in a memorial of it entered in Book R No. 10 Page 193. The
20th (?, 28) August 1770 situate lying and being in Craven County on a
branch of Enoree called Duncans Creek on the south side of Broad River
bounding on all sides on vacant land beginning at a red oak 3+S60E
44 (Chains) 72 (Links) ___ the boundaries on this side is first a red oak
then to a hickory then to a pine then to a stake at the corner. (Next
sentence crossed out). Thence S30W 44..72 and the boundaries on this
line is a red oak, thence to the corner on a hickory, thence N60E-44.12
(mathematical impossibility, this has to be N60W-44..72) the boundaries
on this side is a hickory then a red oak, then a maple on the side of the
creek then to a red oak corner , Thence N30E 44..72 the beginning or
ending where it began, and as the plat will more fully show at large,
Together with all the rights titles numbers and appurtenances thereof
and all the houses, edifices, buildings, barns orchards, gardens, lands,
meadows, commons, pastures, ways, wells, water, water courses, timber
and timber trees wood and woods. Easement profits Commodities
Advantages Hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever to the
said _________ belonging or in any wise appertaining. And the
riversion and riversions Remainder and remainders rents issues and
profits and all and singular the services interest benefits thereunto
belonging. With deeds evidences and writings which concern the said
land or any part thereof jointly with other lands or tenements thereunto
belonging or in anywise appertaining . To have and to hold the
said ________ or tract of 200 acres of land aforesaid- and all and singular
the premises above mentioned and Every Part and parcel thereof with the
appurtenances thereunto belonging unto the said John Crumpton his heirs
and assigns and to the only Proper use and behalf of the said John
Crumpton his heirs and assigns for ever. And the said Lewis Devall and
Teresia Devall his wife for themselves their heirs and assigns Do
Covenant and Grant to and with the said John Crumpton his heirs and
assigns. That the said Lewis Devall and Teresia Devall his wife are both
now absolutely the true and lawful and Right owners of all and singular
the said _____of land tenements Hereditaments and premises above
mentioned. And all and every part and parcel thereof with the
appurtenances and all and singular is that the said Lewis Devall and
Teresia Devall his wife is lawfully and absolutely seized in their right of
a good and sure perfect absolute and Indefeasible estate of Inheritance
in fee- Simple of and in all and singular the premises above mentioned
with all the appurtenances without any manner of condition mortgage
limitation of use or used or other matter cause or thing to alter change or
determine the same and also they the said Lewis Devall and Teresia
Duvall his wife hath now a good rightful power and lawful authority in
their hands and a right to grant bargain and sell and convey the said
tract of 200 acres of land ____ singular the premises and appurtenances-
Thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining, unto the said John
Crumpton his heirs executors administrators and assigns to the only
proper use and behalf of the said John Crumpton his heirs and assigns
forever, according to the true intent and meaning of these presents . And
that the said John Crumpton his heirs and assigns shall and may from
this time hereafter forever- Peaceably and quietly have and hold ____
and Enjoy the said tract of 200 acres of land and the said Lewis Devall
and Teresia Devall his wife for themselves their heirs Executors and
Administrators and assigns and every of them shall and will warrant and
defend the said tract of 200 acres of land and Every of the
appurtenances unto the said John Crumpton his heirs and assigns
forever from them the said Lewis Devall and Teresia Devall his wife
against all and every person or personas claiming or to claim by from
or under them or any of them And by their council, as also clear and
free of all suits Bargains sales shortages, gifts, grants, Leases,
Jointures, dowries, Entails, writings, letters- Troubles or Encumbrance
whatsoever. The quit rents and other provisions to the state or to the
King in the original grant only excepted, according to the true intent and
meaning of these presents _____. In witness whereof the parties have
hereunto interchangeably set their hands and seals the day and year
above written .
