1. Thomas (Michael) MACKIN was born in May 1802 near Kilmaine, Co. Mayo, Ireland.(1) The identification of his birthplace of Kilmaine was only discovered by this researcher in January 1999 and was discovered in the obituary of Thomas's widow, Bridget MACKIN (see text below). Thomas died on 23 Oct 1854 in Marion Co., KY.(2) His obituary was printed on 25 Oct 1854 in The Lebanon Post, Lebanon, Marion CO., KY.(3) It reads:
A worthy old gentleman named Michael Mackey, who
kept the first tolegate on the road to Springfield, died very suddenly
on Monday evening last. He was apparently well on Sunday and was taken
sick during the night and died before day. His disease was supposed to
be "palpitations of the heart." This old man, sought the hospitable shores
of America, several years ago, leaving a large family in Ireland. By prudence,
economy and industry he raised a sufficient amount of money to enable him
to provide for the transportation of his family thither and made them comfortable
after they arrived. Scarcely a year has elapsed since we first saw him
reunited to that family from which he had been so long separated; and now
his dreary pilgrimage has ceased. He had the pleasant consolation of knowing
that he had placed his family in comfort, where want and privation need
never visit.
Mr. Mackey was a quiet, peaceable, upright and
christian man, and withall a good citizen to the land of his adoption.
May he rest in peace.
Thomas was buried at St. Augustine's Church Cemetery in Lebanon, Marion Co., KY. (5)
Thomas was married to Bridget COSTELLO before 1830.
Bridget COSTELLO was born about 1805 near Tuam, Co. Galway, Ireland.
(Tuam is about 19 miles from Thomas's
birthplace in Kilmaine.) Bridget appeared on the census on 6 Jun 1860 in
Lebanon, Marion Co., KY. (6) household

Bridget Mackin died on 23 Feb 1890 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY, at the home of her daughter Adelia MACKIN JOYCE. (Adelia resided at 1131 Sixth Street, Louisville and attended St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church.)
Much of the family history is told in this beautiful tribute to Bridget, published in the Louisville Catholic Advocate, published on 6 Mar 1890:
We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Bridget
Mackin, which took place at the residence of her daughter Mrs. Thos. Joyce,
on Sixth, near Zane street, in this city on Sunday morning, the 2nd instant.
Her maiden name was Bridget Costello; she was born near Tuam city, Galway
County, Ireland, of parents well known and respected, and she early married
Mr. Thomas Mackin, a native of the vicinity of Kilmaine, Mayo county, Ireland,
where the Mackins then and now hold respected and honored positions. Very
many years ago Mrs. Mackin and her husband came to this country and sometime
after settled down at Lebanon in our State. They had several children;
they set them the example that only true Catholic parents can present,
and they had the happiness of seeing that it was followed.
The family was closely related to that which
gave to Ireland the greatest prelate shown in the glorious record of her
episcopate--John MacHale (sic McHale), Archbishop of Tuam, the lion of
the folk of Judah, and it was but natural that one of its members should
enter the Church. Mrs. Mackin had the bliss of seeing her son raised to
the priesthood, he was with her almost at her dying hour, the Rev. W.P.
Mackin, the respected pastor of St. Cecilia's in this city. Mrs. Mackin's
husband died in Lebanon many years ago and since then she resided in Louisville
with her daughter Mrs. Joyce.* Her years were many, her life was edifying,
her last moments were strengthened by the Sacrament, and she passed away
as if uttering a prayer. Four children survive her; the Rev. Father Mackin;
Mrs. Joyce, wife of Mr. Thos. Joyce, of Sixth and Zane streets; and Mrs.
Buckman, and Mr. Thomas Mackin, who reside at Lebanon, Ky.
A solemn high mass of Month's Mind will be celebrated
for the repose of her soul in the Church of St. Cecilia. May she rest in
Peace.
* Thomas Mackin died in 1854. According to census records in Marion County, Bridget (as well as Adelia and Thomas Joyce) were still in Marion County at least after 1860, as seen above. Also, Thomas and Adelia had four children baptized at St. Augustine's, the last of which was on 30 Sept. 1866.
According to the funeral notice printed in the 24 Feb 1890 Louisville Courier-Journal:
Mrs. Bridget Mackin, of Lebanon, Ky., died February 23, at 9 a.m., at the residence of her daughters (sic), 1131 Sixth street, this city. She had a large circle of friends both here and at Lebanon, Ky. High Requium (sic) mass will be celebrated for her this morning at St. Louis Bertrand's and St. Cecilia's church at 8 o'clock. Funeral will take place from St. Augustine's church, Lebanon, Ky., on Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock.
