Larry's Party by Carol Shields

Larry Weller is a regular guy, or so Carol Shields has him think. When we first meet him in 1977 Winnipeg at age 26, he's pondering the pluses of Harris tweed, still living at home, and realizing he's in love with his girlfriend, Dorrie, a flinty car saleswoman. Larry is proud of his job at Flowerfolks. Larry and Dorrie's honeymoon in England points him toward what will be his true vocation--mazes. Just as Larry changes with the times--each elliptical chapter ages him by one or two years--so does his art. As the novel closes, with a bravura dinner party scene, he may finally be at ease in the world. But his creator knows that he is only halfway there, and still has to negotiate his way from the center of the maze to its exit.

Crooked Little Heart written by Anne Lamott

A family finds itself involved in struggles on many levels; from an aspiring young tennis champion's conflicts with the sport and with a mysterious man who stalks her from the bleachers to a stepfather's uncertain fit within the family's close structure. Lamott's focus on the special dynamics of family interrelationships makes for a powerful story. Rather strange, but very haunting and powerful story. Link to Amazon.com to order this book!

Little Miss Strangeby Joanna Rose

Jenny read this book and absolutely loved it! Here's her review: jhakes@mail.millikin.edu from Decatur, IL, 07/21/98 A wonderful coming-of-age story! Little Miss Strange is a powerful and unforgettable story of one young girl's journey to find her identity. Sarajean and the other characters leave a lasting impression on you. I couldn't put this book down and when I did I kept thinking about what Sarajean would discover next about her life. I highly recommend this book! Link to Amazon to order this book!
