In Row 44,(Angel Row) Wednesday 23rd Febryuary 1898, Thirza Ann BENSLEY, better known as Maud Bensley, was murdered. She was well known to the Police. She lived with Samuel Steel but entertained other men. Samuel cut her throat with a razor and then tried to commit suicide himself. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. He would have been hanged but for the fact that he suffered epileptic fits and pleaded insanity.

Kitty Witches Row is the best known of all of the Rows. The West entrance is only 24 inches wide. Before the Rows were lit this Row was carefully avoided by children at night because of the tales told.

A Kitty witch in Yarmouth was the term applied to women with blood smeared faces, who fantastically dressed, paraded town,demanding contributions at certain seasons of the year.
Whether this was the reason for the name of the Row or whether
it was because of the fact that a Christopher Wych once lived there is not really known.

In 1934 on the corner of row 112, a marine store dealer called Horace Butcher was found with his head battered.He had been hit with a 7lb weight. It was suggested that the murder could have been carried out by a seaman but but the murder remains unsolved.
