I PLEDGE

It’s his day
teacher picked him
scared nervous proud
he stands before the class
right hand over his heart
he starts

I pledge allegiance to the flag

In unison friends join in

of the United States Of America

So young he barely understands
emotions swell -- a tear starts
tiny drops of pride

and to the republic
for which it stands

as friends look on
tears trickle

one nation indivisible under God

his words barely audible

with liberty and justice for all

as he returns to his seat
his sleeve wipes
across his face
