The Homemaker

Dear Master, I would tarry long
In worship at Thy feet,
As Mary, at Thy footstool sit
And hold communion sweet;
But Lord, I have a house to keep--
I may not longer stay;
For who would lay the breakfast out,
Or clear the things away?

I meet Thee in the morning hour
After the fires are lit,
And precious are the moments then
As at Thy feet I sit;
But I must haste away so soon
To make the toast and tea--
Since I can sit no longer, Lord,
Wilt Thou not walk with me?

For I have but a Martha's task--
My busy days slip by
Washing and ironing, getting meals,
Making the cobwebs fly;
But while I go about my work
Hustling to and fro,
May I not keep my tryst with Thee
And worship as I go?

So as I scour pots and pans
And make the kitchen shine,
I may commune with Thee, dear Lord,
And know Thy presence mine.
I fellowship with her of old
Who chose the better part,
For tho' I must have Martha's hands,
I may have Mary's heart.

~E. Margaret Clarkson ~

Though this poem describes a homemaker's role
from an earlier time period,
the sentiment is still very true today.

Middle Age: The Season of Strength
(from Series: Four Seasons of Life)
by Charles Parson & Lyman Atwater (1868)

I think this lovely painting evokes the mood of this earlier time when
family, home life and relationships were of utmost importance.

It's very true -- The kitchen IS the heart of any home!
