William Jamieson ~ Obituary

ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE
[Jan 8 1888 ~ Source: Renfrew Mercury]

William Jamieson, Esq., J.P., died at this
residence in Horton,
on Monday, 8th inst., after having been confined
to his bed
by paralysis for the last three or four years.

The deceased
was born at Stonehouse, near Gasgow, Scotland, 67 years ago;
and emigrated
to Canada when about 17 years ago.
He first worked in the township of
Drummond,
and then spent some time in Utica and Rochester.

A year or two
afterwards he came to Horton on a visit
to the late David Barr and late
John Forrest,
who had come to Canada in the same ship with him.
He remained
in Horton, working the first winter with John and Alex Martin;
and then
purchasing the farm now owned by Mr. Robert Leitch.
This he sold to the
late Archibald Leitch,
and purchased the property now owned by his son,
John A.,
on which he lived for the remainder of his life.

He married a daughter of the late Henry Airth, Sr.,
by whom he had a numerous family.

For many years Mr. Jamieson took an active part in local public affairs,
as
Councillor and Reeve;
but latterly, he gradually withdrew from them,

and participated actively only as Treasurer of the township,
as a member
of the Agricultural Society,
and as President of the South Renfrew Reform
Association.

Up till the time of the illness which confined him to his
bed,
he was frequntly called upon to act as Magistrate;
and in that
capacity was perhaps most generally known.

As one of the early settlers in the
County he was widely connected,
and his funeral, which took place on Tuesday
afternoon,
was probably the most numerously attended
that has ever
taken place in theis section.
