Jewel Border Tutorial

Here is the Wine Jewel set.

File>New

Size: Width - 200, Height - 200

Color or Texture of your choice

16.7 million colors

On your Layer Palette, click on the New Layer icon. (You can name the layer Bar if you'd like).

Now we'll create the bar as a new file and copy and paste it into the layer.

File>New>20 x 220, 16.7 million colors

Image>Plug-in Filters>BladePro>WE Subdued Gold preset>OK

Ctrl c to copy

Click on your original image, Bar Layer, and do Edit, Paste as New Selection.  I put my Wine Jewel in the middle, but this one is 50 pixels in from the left.  Just leave enough room for the jewel to go on top of the bar.

With the bar still selected:

Image>Effects>Drop Shadow:

   Color: Black

   Opacity: 50

   Blur: 5

Offset: Vertical, 0 and Horizontal: 3, Ok

Image>Effects>Drop Shadow:

   Color: Black

   Opacity: 50

   Blur: 5

Offset: Vertical, 0 and Horizontal: -3 (minus 3), Ok

Now take your cursor and slide the bar up or down where the bevel won't show at the top or bottom.  You should have a smooth bar.

Ctrl d to deselect.

Add another layer and name it Jewel.

Choose a framed jewel from Sassy Rose's tubes and set Scale at 50.

Place the tube in the middle of the bar.  If you don't get it where you want it the first time, press ctrl z and try again.

Now we'll add a drop shadow using the same settings as those for the bar.  The image doesn't have to be selected because it's in its own layer.

Image>Effects>Drop Shadow:

   Color: Black

   Opacity: 50

   Blur: 5

Offset: Vertical, 0 and Horizontal: 3, Ok

Image>Effects>Drop Shadow:

   Color: Black

   Opacity: 50

   Blur: 5

Offset: Vertical, 0 and Horizontal: -3 (minus 3), Ok

Now for the border:

Image>Add Borders>Yes to merge layers.

Uncheck Symmetric. Set 0 in all but set Right to 1000

If you used a texture as I did, you'll want to use the Magic Wand to select the border you just added and fill with the texture.  Same goes for color unless you set your background color before you added the border.

Ctrl d to deselect and save!  I compressed it at 50 because it was 97k to start with. Textures make your background size larger.

File>Save As>Options>Compression Factor: 25 or 50.

Name it and save as jpg.
