Robert CORBET Sheriff

A Knight of Moreton Corbet; Sheriff 1419.

Margaret

Malory was not Margaret's surname. After Robert died, she married William Mallory. Her children to us were with Robert Corbet. Margaret's original surname is unknown. The following article uses the wrong surname for Margaret and continues the line back to King Edward I. Gary Boyd Roberts points out that this line has since been proven incorrect due to the lack of a Mallory descent.

TAG Vol. 35, p. 104
Margaret Malory married Robert Corbet of Morton, Shropshire, and died in 1438 [Archaeologia, supra; Harleian Pub., vol. 28 (Visitation of Shropshire) pp. 100, 101; new ed., Complete Peerage vol. V. p. 88, note a; Cal. Inq. Post Mortem, 17 Henry VI]. "Margaret wife of Robert Corbet of Morton: heir is son Roger" [Sir Thomas Phillipps Inquisitions Post Mortem].

Roger is said to have been aged 24. years in 1438, which seems too old for the chronology, as it would imply that Margaret was born at least as early as 1400, and we cannot set the date of her father's birth earlier than 1382. The jurors may have overstated Roger's age in order to avoid his being made a ward to the Crown, always a costly proceeding. It seems likely that Margaret Malory was born a little later than 1400, possibly 1402-3; if her son Roger was born around 1419, he would have been 19 instead of 24 in 1438, and these dates and ages would be in harmony with other facts. It also seems likely that Sir Thomas Malory was a half-brother, son or a later marriage of her father.

Known children:
1. Roger Corbet, the heir.
2. Mary Corbet, see below.

TAG Vol. 40, p. 98
X. Margaret Malory, born about 1397, who married, perhaps through her stepmother's influence, Robert Corbet of Morton Corbet, Shropshire, a descendant of the Erdingtons named above. They had:
XI. Mary Corbet, born not far from 1430

The above is:

The family of Winslows existed in England long previous to the first record here listed. It is believed this English Family was entirely distinct from the Winslows of Denmark, the lst ancestor of the latter which has been found, being recorded Peder Jacobsen Winslow, father of Prof. Jacob Benigus Winslow, who was born 2 April 1669, which was later than the pilgrim Wlnslows. However, there was a parish in Scania named Winslof or Winslow, at an early date, which may have originated with a more ancient family, from whom it is possible that the English and American Winslows are descended.

About the 1st records we have of the English Winslows are in connection with the family of Crouchmans, whose residence was called Crouchman's Hall; but when it came into possession of the Winslows by marriage, it was styled Wyncelow's Hall and the ancient arms of that family are sculptured in stone In various points of the old hall and also the Manor.

Jno. Wyncelowe who married the heiress Mary or Mariota Crouchman, was of great repute in the City of London about 1350, but it is not determined from what point of England his family came, though the name is frequently mentioned in the early history of London.

The Winslow Family: Wyncelowe, Winselowe, Winslowe, Winslow. Lineage from William Wincelowe (1300) through Keuelm Winslow (1599).

Thomas BRIGHAM Sr

THOMAS BRIGHAM, born probably about 1475, is the earliest of the Brighams of Holme on Spalding Moor of whom record has been found. As "Thomas Brigham senior" he appears on the rental roll of the Manor of Holme in 1528, as holding one toft, an orchard, a barn, a close called Leyre Pytts, and half a bovat. of land called Salvan Lands, etc., for which he paid yearly 14s. 8d. (Public Record Office, Rentals and Surveys, Roll 735.) No will or administration on his estate is preserved; and the name of his wife has not been learned.

He was probably the father of the following child:
2 .1 Thomas2, b. about 1500.
