Notes

Gilbert The MARSHALL

GILBERT THE MARSHAL died in or shortly after 1130.
His wife's name is unknown. He was the first known holder of the office of Master Marshal in the King's Household, claimed by hereditary right, although the office was, in 1135, considered to be one only of the third rank. The Marshal was in immediate charge of the horses, and was subordinate to the Constables, who controlled the stables, kennels and mews, in fact, everything connected with the King's sport. He left lands in Wiltshire to his son John.

Child, mentioned by Cokayne [10:93]:
i.  d. 1165; m. (1) Aline, m. (2) Sibyl de Salisbury.

Saher de QUINCY I

SAHER DE QUENCY I (or QUINCY), a tenant of Anselm de Chokes at Long Buckby, Northamptonshire, England, about 1124-1129, died probably about 1157. He married, after 1136, MAUD DE ST. Liz (who was dead in 1163), widow of Robert Fitz
Richard de Clare and daughter of Simon de St. Liz, Earl OF HUNTINGDON and Northampton, by Maud, first daughter and coheir of Waltheof, Earl of Northumberland, Huntingdon and Northampton. He may have derived his name from Cuinchy, near Bethune on the border of Artois and Flanders, which is less than sixteen kilometers from Chocques, the original home of his overlord, Anselm de Chokes. He witnessed a charter as the lord of Daventry, Northants., in 1146 [Barlow, NEHGR, 112:63].

Children, mentioned by Cokayne:
i.    Saher II , d. 1190; m. 1162 Asceline Peverel, widow of Geoffrey de Waterville.
ii.   Robert, d. 1197; m. (1) Orable of Leuchars, m. (2) Eve.
