Fayette FARR

BIRTH: Age 16.

Jeremiah FARR Sr

Jeremiah was born 10-22-1773, son of Aaron and (Hannah) Wheeler Farr Sr. He served in the war of 1812 as a private in Capt. Timothy Cornwall's Co., Col Clark Allen 55th Regiment NYV Militia 5-30-1814 to 6-7-1814 and participated in the Battle of Big Sandy in Ellisburg, NY. With both parents mentioned here, it is another connection between Jeremiah and Aaron

CENSUS (Extracted from ancestry.com scans): Oct. 15, 1850. Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., New York. Page 341R stamped. Lines 5-7. Dwelling 1903, Family 1920. Jeremiah Farr, 31M, Carpenter & J. (probably stands for 'joiner”), Real Estate valued at 1000, no birth place shown; Harriet S., 30F, no birth place shown; Greenleaf, 3M, no birth place shown. No birth places are given anywhere on this page unless they are not New York, which I take to imply that all blank birth places are New York. Uri Farr and family also appear on this page.

June 18, 1870. Town of Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co., NY. Post Office of Millens Bay. Page 35 (185 stamped). Lines 25-28. Dwelling 265, Family 264. Farr, John, 62M, Farmer, Real Estate valued at 5650, other property valued at 1880, b. New York; Harriet, 52F, keeps house, b. New York; C., 23M (or 28M), at home, b. New York; James, 1 8M, at home, b. New York; Harron, Georgian, 76F (could be 16F), HouseKeeper, b. New York. Despite the many variances in names from the 1850 census, and despite the ten-year difference in Jeremiah/John's age, I believe this census applies to the family of Jeremiah and Harriet Farr. It is indeed remarkable how, wherever I look, the 1870 census is always problematic in some regard or another!

CHILD'S GAZETTEER OF JEFFERSON COUNTY TOWN OF CAPE VINCENT
The following family group descriptions are adapted from Hamilton Child's “Gazetteer of Jefferson County, N.Y.”, published in 1890.
http ://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/childcap.htm
Jeremiah Farr, son of Aaron, was a native of Vermont, and died in the town of El!isburg at the age of 50 yeas. He married Katie Belden of Painted Post, N.Y., by whom he had children as follows: John B., Charles A., Edward R., Alzina, Zimri, Uri, and Jeremiah. The latter was born in Ellisburgh, whence he removed to Cape Vincent in 1867. He married Harriet S., daughter of Ira and Hannah (Benton) North, of Redfield, N.Y., and their children are Green leaf and Ira. The latter married Carrie daughter of Martin and Catharine Hay, of Cape Vincent.

From Steve Cota July 2005
“I got word back from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) today regarding my requests for Jeremiah Far Sr.'s War of 1812 pension file, and Jeremiah Farr Jr.'s Civil War pension file: Neither could be found. In the case of Jeremiah Farr Jr., I suspected he might not be a Civil War veteran at all, because I could not find his name on the National Park Service's website tabulating Civil War veterans. So NARA's inability to find him probably means he did not really serve in the Civil War.”

Edward Robbins FARR

Gertude Snell's 1946 "History of Farr Family is Given" (see Carrie Hay for complete citation) discusses Edward Farr and family. My transcription from the original clipping reads: "Edward Farr, son of Ira and Caroline Farr, later married Florence Fox of Depauville. Mrs. Farr's mother, Sarah Carver, daughter of a pioneer family coming to northern New York from Massachusetts, had attended the Sand Bay school, as did also an uncle who later became superintendent of schools in Wisconsin. Sarah Carver also taught here before her marriage to James Fox of Depauville. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Edward Farr returned to Sand Bay where they bought the original 25 acres and home once owned by Mr. Farr's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Hay.

"The couple built a new home directly across the highway from the old home and are still residing there. Their four children attended Sand Bay school. Dorothy, now deceased, became a teacher after her graduation from the Potsdam Normal school. She lived in Washington after her marriage. Leslie, a graduate of Michigan university is in business in Buffalo. John A., a graduate of George Washington university is a practicing lawyer in Washington, D. C., since his discharge from the army.

"Stanley Farr married Florence Bovee of Depauville, and lives in the house built by his great-grandfather, Martin Hay. He is employed by the Freight and Express company of Clayton. Mr. and Mrs. Farr have three sons, all of whom have attended the local school as representatives of the fifth generation of their family. Willard, the oldest son, was recently discharged from the army of occupation in Germany. He is a graduate of the Cape Vincent High school. Stanley, jr., is a sixth grade pupil in the Cape Vincent school while Richard still attends the local school.

"Mrs. Edward Farr served as teacher in the local school at two different periods after her marriage. Previous to that she taught in other nearby districts."

Cemetery Inscriptions by A. E. Rogers, Ellen & John Bartlett (available online at the Jefferson Co., NY usgenweb site), list in St. Lawrence Cemetery: "Farr, Edward R., 1873-20 Dec 1947, 75y 8m 4d, mrd 5 Dec 1895; Farr, Florence J., (Fox), wf. Edward R., 1873-10 Sep. 1946, 73y 1m 9d." Edward's age at death implies a birth date of April 16, 1872. Florence's age at death implies a birth date of August 01, 1873.

Wherever this information came from, it did not come from the headstone itself. In the digital photo sent around by Doug Farr, the inscription clearly reads: Farr. Edward R., 1873-1947, Father. Florence J., 1873-1946, Mother." Beside this headstone is a small marker that reads "John Alden Farr, 1910-1990." This same marker appears in the Rogers & Bartlett inscriptions, but without any indication that it is associated with Edward R. and Florence J. Farr's headstone.

The above is from Steve Cota.

Florence Jane FOX

Wedding in Depauville (handwritten date 1897)

A very pleasant wedding occurred on Sunday afternoon, Dec 5 at 3 o'clock at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Fox of Depauville. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. B. G. Blaisdell in the presence of the immediate relatives when Mr. Edward R Farr of St. Lawrence and Miss Florence J. Fox were united in the sacred bonds of wedlock. Mr. Farr is respected by all who know him. His father, Mr. Ira J. Farr of St. Lawrence is a farmer. Mr. Farr took a course of study at the Kingston Business college in 1895. Miss Fox is one of the estimable young ladies of Depauville. She graduated from the Normal School of Potsdam in 1896 and is a most successful teacher. The happy couple started at 4 O'Clock for their future home at the residence of Miss Delia L. Hay near St. Lawrence.
