1 June 1902 - Forest City News - "Jerry Kelleher, Forest City's star
pitcher,
was recently given a trial by the Scranton Club and proved speedy enough
for
professional company. He made a good showing in all of the games in
which he appeared."
"Jeremiah (Jerry) Kelleher, one of the community's best known and
respected
residents, passed away early Monday morning at his home, 71 Depot Street,
following a long illness. (Death date: 31 Oct 1950)
A native of Tanners Falls, Wayne County, he was a son of the late Dennis
and
Honora Kelleher, and had resided in Forest City for the past 58 years.
He was
a retired employee of the Hudson Coal Company, working as a pump runner
at the coal brook colliery. In his youth he was active in sporting
circles and served as an umpire in local baseball circles. He was a
communicant of St. Agnes church and a member of the Holy name Society.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ina Sterling, seven sons; Dennis,
Paul, Lee,
and Raymond at home, CWO Herbert, U.S. Army with the American Embassy in
Yugoslavia, Cornelius, California, and Vincent, Highland Falls, N.Y.; four
daughters, Mrs. Ina Cutler and Naomi, Hicksville, N.Y. and Eleanor and
Veronica at home, two brothers, Arthur, Chester, Pa and Cornelius,
Yonkers, a sister Katherine Kelleher, Forest City and three grandchildren.
The funeral was held from the family home this morning with a requiem mass
celebrated in St. Agnes church by the Rev. Leo Craig. Burial was made in
St.
Agnes Cemetery.
Jerry's funeral was reported in the Forest City news on Nov. 2, 1950, as
follows:
"The funeral of Jeremiah Kelleher, 71 Depot Street, took place from the
home
Thursday morning with mass in St. Agnes church, celebrated by Rev. Leo
Craig,
Pastor.
Interment, parish cemetery. Casket bearers were; Thomas McCormick, Edward
Stratford, Gregory O'Neill, Martin Kelly, Edward Kilpatrick and John
Dunleavy."
