Birdie's Lighthouse

by Deborah Hopkinson

Birdie's Lighthouse is a 1998-1999 Hoosier Nominee for Kindergarten through Third Grade.

Deborah Hopkinson uses the true life stories of other girls and women who acted as keepers of a lighthouse during emergencies to create her character, Bertha Holland. I don't know too much about lighthouses and all the work one must do when you are a lighthouse keeper, but this book gave Kirsten and I a new understanding of the life.

The story takes place through the accounts in Bertha's diary in the 1850's. Birdie is ten years old when she and her family move out on an island all by themselves, so her father can be the keeper of the lighthouse. Her mother teaches her to read and other things you usually learn in school. There are no other children to play with, just your siblings. It seems like a lonely life and definitely not an easy one.

Reading about the past and how hard it was is important for young kids today. Our lives are so different and it is good to read about how children lived in the past.

Rating: 5 Stars!

This is a great book. Even though it is rated for kids in kindergarten through third grade, it might be difficult for some to understand. I think even older children would like the book especially if they are interested in history or the sea. The book is only available in hardback, but it is a book your children will read over and over again. It can be purchased on line through Amazon's secured order site!
