The Floating House

by Scott Russell Sanders

The Floating House by Scott Russell Sanders is a 1997-98 Hoosier Award Nominee for Kindergarten through Third Grade.

During the winter of 1815, Mary and Jonathan McClure waited with their parents for spring to come. They were living on their flatboat next to the Ohio River near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When spring came, they made the long journey south to Jeffersonville in Southern Indiana. Indiana isn't even a state yet! They will make their long journey with other families who are moving to a place where they could buy land cheap and where sticks would break out into leaves when put into the ground.

Even though the journey would only take about a month, they would travel through Pennsylvania, Ohio, western Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Rating: Five Stars

The book was interesting to Kirsten because she liked to see how people lived in the "olden days" and I enjoyed it, because it was interesting to see how they navigated the waters. It can be purchased on line through Amazon's secured order site!
