A Place Called Freedom
by Scott Russell Sanders

A Place Called Freedom is a 1998-1999 Hoosier Nominee for Kindergarten through Third Grade.

This book is based upon the true story of how Lyles Station, Indiana was settled in 1832 by freed slaves. The story is about the Starman Family who were freed by their owner in Tennessee and traveled by night until they reached Indiana. They met some Quakers who helped them get started. In no time they were able to buy their own land. The father, Joshua Starman, returned often to Tennessee to bring back other family members and soon the area where they settled became known as Freedom. (Today I guess it is known as Lyles Station.)

Rating:

This is a great way for beginning readers to start learning a little bit of history. They can identify with James Starman and Lettie Starman in the book because they are little children too who learn to read in the book. I think it should be a required reading book for all new readers starting to learn about the history of America. It can be purchased on line through Amazon's secured order site!
