THE NEVADA CHAPTER OF PROJECT LINUS

Providing Security through Blankets

Originally Project Linus targeted pediatric cancer patients, but now Project Linus has broadened its focus aiming toward seriously ill or traumatized children ... children in need of a big hug.

To date, Project Linus has delivered over 50,000 security blankets to children around the world and has over 250 chapters in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Nevada chapter of Project Linus is brand new and I need blanketeers or canvassers! Blanketeers can provide me with blankets or squares.

The completed blankets can be knit, crocheted, or quilted as long as the blanket is in child friendly colors. The following general Project Linus guidelines also need to be met:

  1. The blanket must be handmade - the care and loving that go into a blanket are as important as the blanket itself!
  2. The blanket must be approximately 40 inches by 60 inches.
  3. The blanket must be washable.
  4. The pattern and color should be child friendly.

Squares can be knit or crocheted. They need to be made from acrylic worsted weight yarn, and 6 or 7 inches square. By donating squares, you can contribute even if you are short on time! (Please note: If you are planning on donating to a different chapter, please check with its coordinator first - not all chapters accept only squares.)

If you have a group that would like to be involved, like a Girl Scout troop, the best idea I can think of for a project is for each person to make a square (or several depending on the number of people in your group). You can then sew the group's squares together into a blanket.

Canvassers are simply people who are willing to help spread the word. It could be as simple as posting a flyer at your church or local yarn shop. I am definately not looking for people to plaster neighborhoods with flyers, however. If you are interested, I can snail-mail you a hard copy of the flyer.
