Frequently asked questions about: WEB & SITE RINGS.

(Not suitable for FTM hosted websites)

Notes prepared by Doug McLean any errors or ommissions noted please contact  Doug McLean

What are they? They are a group of sites related to one another, usually by a common theme. If you select "List" on the Genealogical RingSite below and select a keyword matching your requirements a number of sites will appear, keep doing this and you could wind up visiting 10-20 Genealogical Pages in an hour.
RingSites are FREE and are designed to attract visitor to your site

      How do they work?
      1. When you press the "LIST" tag on a Bravenet SiteRing or "RING HUB" on a Yahoo! WebRing you are taken to a site where you have the opportunity to utilise a "keyword" search for sites either within "This Ring" or within "All Rings"
When a site or sites are displayed you simple enter the site to search out the required information
      Example
Go to the SiteRing below and click the "List" tab and type in the name McLean, you will get a site called Clan McLean Connections - open that site and search if you so desire.

Fill this form in taking care to ensure that your site URL is correct and your e-mail address is correct. Also carefully select your "keywords" to ensure that they accurately reflect your site content and that any alternative spelling is included.
        2. When you click on the "submit" button your information is forwarded to the "RingMaster" who will decide if your site is acceptable and at the same time you will receive a HTML fragmentation to paste onto your site.
You will receive the following message on screen and via e-mail:

Pasting a WEB or SITERING "HTML" to a Geocities or Rootsweb Page
Note that Yahoo! uses a navigational bar instead of HTML - see below, the pasting system however is the same.
        1. Copy the HTML fragmentation supplied by the RINGMASTER.
        2. Open your site and select "File Manager".
        3. Select the file to be used.
        4. Select the position where you would like the ring to appear.
        5. Select "paste" from the menu bar.
        6. Preview your site and if happy with location save your file.
Note: Webmasters using the geocities "PageBuilder" program are advised to consider using the "FileManager" program to paste the HTML . While this is not essential I consider it a simpler operation.

Pasting a WEB or SITERING to a Homestead page.
        1. Copy the HTML fragmentation supplied by the RINGMASTER.
        2. Open your site and select "Page & File Manager".
        3. Highlight the file to be used.
        4. Select "Edit".
        5. Click the AZ tab on your toolbar which will expose a list of elements on the left hand side of your page.
        6. Select "Insert HTML" - this will bring up the "Element Editor".
        7. Resize and locate the box appearing on your page within a green border to suit both the HTML code and the required location on your page.
        8. Select "Edit HTML" within the "Element Editor" - this will bring up a "Snippet Box".
        9. On you keyboard select Ctrl-V and the HTLM you copied previously will be automatically pasted.
        10. Click "OK".
        11. Click on "SAVE".
        12. Click on "VIEW" and bingo the sitering is in place.

Note: There may be a need to edit the page to locate the webring in the required position and/or resize the Ring

Altering "Owner name" and "e-mail address on the Bravenet SiteRing banner.
If you would prefer your own name and e-mail address instead of Doug Mclean you can make the following alterations within the Genealogical Research SiteRing HTML script.

1.Select the lines reading as follows :(i.e lines 7 and 8)
      This site owned by:
      Doug McLean
      and alter to read
      This site owned by:
      insert your name

      2. Carefully check that there is no gap between mailto: and your e-mail address if there is a gap your e-mail address may not operate - you can check this when the code is in place by clicking on your name and a blank e-mail form should appear.

      (b) Yahoo! WebRing System.
The Yahoo system requires that you be a registered member before applying for a "Yahoo sponsored webring" - this is not a difficult procedure as you will be offered the opportunity to become registered when you apply to "join" your first "Yahoo" webring.
When you press the join button on a webring you will be taken to a site which explains the procedures:
      1. When you press the "Join" (its FREE) tab you will be taken to a site where a form is located. Fill this form in taking care to ensure that your site URL is correct (i.e it must be the same as the page on which you intend to place your webring) and your e-mail address is correct. Also carefully select your description to ensure that they accurately reflect your site content and that any alternative spelling is included.
      2. If the RingMaster accepts your site in the Ring you will receive an e-mail instructing you how to install the "Ring navigation bar" onto your site.
Yahoo will share the information collected on this page with the RingMaster so that they can review your site for inclusion in their Ring.
      3. In due course you will receive an e-mail containing the following plus instructions on requirements.
        Congratulations
You have submitted your site to the Ring titled"-------" The information you submitted is:
          Site Title:----------------------------------------
          Site URL: ---------------------------------------
          Yahoo! ID: ----------------------------
      4. You may be required to have the server-side Navigation Bar (SSNB) inserted onto you site . If you have already installed the SSNB you have no need to do it again because once the navigational bar is in place the Yahoo! WebRing system automatically places an additional ring SSNB on your site when you add another WebRing.

The e-mail will give you a URL which will direct you to the site from where the "script" for the SSNB can be obtained.
