Alexander was born in Little Dunkeld, Scotland in 1821. Alexander departed for Australia on the Utopia which sailed from Liverpool on 3/11/1853 and arrived in Portland on the 27/1/1854.

Alexanders wife and their two youngest children. Catherine and Robert, died in Portland soon after their arrival,( it appears that their eldest child may have remained in Scotland, he married Janet Davidson wife number two of three) in Portland during 1854. Janet also a passenger on the Utopia, was initially employed by a Doctor Greig of Portland.
Janet arrived in Portland aboard the same boat as Alexander McLean and his family on the 23 January 1854. The Utopia sailed from Liverpool on 3/11/1853 Shipping documents indicate that Janet was with a group of "domestic servants" and that she was engaged by a Dr Grier for a period of six months. This evidence suggests that is very likely that Alexander met Janet at least 12 months before their marriage in October 1854.
Current research indicates that Harriett Hornby was a passenger on the Golden Era, which arrived in Australia, June 1854. Harriett was shown as being 13 years of age which is within two years of my record of birth yet the date of arrival matches the "Time in Victoria" i.e 52 years in 1907 shown on her death certificate. I suspect that the age should read 15.
