Gail sent me the following two articles about the "A Golden Moment"
show (Thanks Gail!). It
appears that Kristi will skate to Sarah Brightman's Time To Say Goodbye
at the show:
The Daily
Review today (Sept. 17, 1999) has two articles about the ice skating
show tomorrow. The
first is titled:
Live Music, Skaters To Unite In Concert
Billed as a skating concert
on ice, "A Golden Moment" is a collaboration between
Olympic medalists Kristi Yamaguchi, Ekaterina Gordeeva,
Tara Lipinski, Rosalynn
Sumners and Katarina Witt, and musicians and singers
like Keiko Matsui, Sarah Brightman,
Taylor Dayne and the Oakland East Bay Symphony.
Co-hosted by Peggy Fleming,
this event takes place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oakland
Arena. Tickets cost $50 to $150. A part of the proceeds
will support the fight against breast
cancer.
According to Yamaguchi, the
project evolved over time. "We wanted to do something
that reached a lot of people," she says, "We decided
on the cause of breast cancer because
it touched so many people in our lives. There is
so much research and work on awareness
we wanted to help out with.
"We developed this concept
for a group of female performers to come together. I asked
my girlfriends from the skating circuit to join
me. And we decided on live music to add
another boost to the show."
Yamaguchi, for instance,
will skate to a live performance by Brightman of the song
"Time to Say Goodbye." Lipinski will skate solo
to another Brightman tune. Gordeeva will
likely perform with Matsui. Sumners is being paired
up with Dayne.
Organizers can't say how
much money they hope to raise, "We want to be ambitious,"
Yamaguchi says, "But this being a first-year event,
we're not quite sure. Obviously, the
more we raise, the better. If we hit, say, the $200,000
mark, that would be great....
"Depending on how it goes
this time around, we might try to make it at least a biannual
affair, then turn it eventually into an annual affair.
We'll see."

Saturday's "A Golden Moment"
will also be taped for television broadcast later this year.
It is scheduled to air on Lifetime Nov. 7 and on
Fox Dec.11.

The second article is more about one of the performers, Jazz keyboardist Keiko Matsui. It's titled:
Matsui makes niche in 'this kind of music'
"This kind of music," as
Matsui calls it, is her eclectic-often ethereal-blend of jazz fusion,
rhythm and blues and straight-ahead improvisation.
It's the sort of borderline New Age
sound her fans adore.
Expect to see many of them
Saturday at the Oakland Arena when the popular performer
joins Sarah Brightman and Taylor Dayne, as well
as Olympic figure-skating medalists Kristi
Yamaguchi, Ekaterina Gordeeva and Katarina Witt,
in "A Golden Moment."
Proceeds from this ice skating
concert will support the fight against breast cancer.
