Donuhue recounts the experiences of this successful young figure skater, beginning with her remembering how she watched Dorothy Hamill during the 1976 Olympics. Kristi Yamaguchi began skating the following year year at the age of six, and progressed rapidly; however, strengthening her legs, not competition, was her first goal.

The author emphasizes Yamaguchi's hard work and dedication to her sport as well as her attempts to maintain a relatively normal private life. With the exception of two years, she always attended public school, arranging ice time around her academic schedule. Although barraged by media attention and endorsement offers following her 1992 Olympic performance, Yamaguchi seems to have emerged unscathed as a likable role model.

Illustrated with black-and-white photos and appended with a figure skating glossary, this will make a popular addition to the sports shelf.
