Fleet Center
Review by Brenna
This was such an incredible show! Of course, having front row, it was the closest I've ever been, and I swear Kurt looked right at me in the intro and smiled! Ahhh. I think it was much better overall than last year's, which I didn't see in person, but still.
The opening number was cool, I liked it a whole lot better than last year's. The whole drum beat pounding was a great effect, even if it was pretty loud. The only thing about it was the fact that Scott was introduced before Kristi and TL. My mom was kinda upset at that, she thought Scott should have been last. I agreed with her, after all, everyone loves him the most anyway, but it's always been the main female stars ahead of him, as in the program book, where TL and Kristi occupy the first two pages, and Scott is pushed into the third page. Oh well, it's still his tour, he still closes the show, even after all these years, which he definitely should.
For some reason, I didn't get a copy of the order of skate, and I don't really know why, but anyway, the order I talk about here might not be the order they were skated, but anyway.
A part of me was sorta disappointed that we had to see Kurt's clown routine again, but seeing it live for the first time was better than on TV. He can really work a crowd, and of course he's always loved here in Boston. I don't think people stopped screaming out all night long how much they loved him. Renee Roca & Gorsha Sur were beautiful as usual, they really have come into their own as professionals. I don't really remember a whole lot about their program besides the fact that there seemed to be a lot of lifts. Very well done, quite impressive.
Next up, I believe was Katia and her ribbon. Right off the bat, she hit an awesome 3 toe, totally in control, which is great for her. Things seemed to be going smoothly, until she got a little lost in her prop and took a spill on her 2 lutz, but no one really seemed to care. After, I think she also dropped it another time, and made a gesture as if to say, "Oh, who cares"-cute. I still can't get over how much speed and lightness she skates with, so much more so than any of the women, it's really great to see.
Ilia, up next, showed off much of his technical prowess in the jumping department, with a 3 loop, 3 toe, 3 axel (hand down), and I think a 3 lutz. I don't know if I really like this number, though, maybe too, oh, I don't know, but it's missing something. I'm pretty sure that Jenni Meno & Todd Sand were up next, and they skated very, very well, the audience really enjoyed them. The throw 2 axel was solid, and the lifts were very well executed. They only had one minor problem, in their combination spin, where they did one of those Bechke/Petrov-type moves where he throws her around, and it appeared as if Todd almost dropped her or something. But, they recovered quickly and finished it off well. I really like this program for them, they sell it well.
I can't really remember if Tara & her genie program came next or
not, but she skated it strongly, with a 3 toe, 3 toe, and either a 3 sal
or 3 loop. The funny thing was it seemed as though the second 3 toe was
going to be a 3 flip, cause she seemed to wait a bit more, but then changed
her mind and did a 3 toe instead. I agree with lots of others in that the
program had a bit too much dancing and posing, but she still seemed to
enjoy herself. I found the audience applause was
down a bit from the previous numbers, kinda weird considering she's
the reigning women's Olympic Champion, but she was still really good.
The whole "Old Friends" number was so cute, especially to see them all together, and realize the fact that they all are really good friends. Scott was good, although he fell(surprisingly! oh heavens!) on his 2 axel, but oh well. He also landed a great 3 toe, plus the always great backflip.
It was also cute seeing Kurt & Steven goofing off with each other, and Scott trying to follow them. Katia and Scott flirting was fun, too, you know they are such great friends.
Kristi's Bridge Over Troubled Water was really good, I think she really gets into the number, and although she fell on her 3 loop, she landed her 3 lutz, some 2 axels, and a 3 toe.
Seeing them all standing together at the end of the first act would be such a great photo, it's too bad I didn't have a camera, but of well.
Act II
Opening with Kurt laying on the big sofa was a cute way to start things, the way he just kept rolling around, almost falling off, was typical Kurt. Loved how he kept poking his head through the hole when others were sitting on the sofa and he was behind it. Tara seemed to be totally in her element, having all the guys after her, she must have so much fun on this tour, I can't imagine a young girl starting to skate who doesn't look up to her.
Although I've never had anything against Steven Cousins, after seeing him last night I think I like him a whole lot more than I ever did before, he can really turn on a crowd, similar to Kurt sometimes. I think Boston might have a new favorite, someone to always wait for when SOI comes here again. And boy, can he dance!
Lulu's program was sorta, um, I don't know, maybe not right for her. But, then again, I kept thinking, why would they keep having her do these Kristi-type numbers if she really doesn't like it? Anyways, there was a lot of dancing in this program, and she did a 3 toe(really 2-footed), and a 1 axel. During her number, Steven came over and stood right in front of us, pulled up his shirt a bit, and pointed to his backside, as if to say, "What, ain't I fine? What gives? I'm hot, right?" Very, cute, he got a good response from that!
Probably one of my favorite moments in the show was when he kept chasing after Kristi & Lulu and they kept on avoiding him leaving him all alone on the ice confused and frustrated, he's so cute I think I have a new male skater to add to my favs!
I'm not sure who came next, but among those that did, Bechke & Petrov were AWESOME, definitely getting one of the largest crowd ovations of the night. Solid throw 3 salchow, and great tricks & lifts, they will really be missed. Tara & Kurt’s little duet thing was really pretty cute, especially with Kurt and all his priceless expressions. There’s nothing else to really mention about it, there was a couple of ice dance-type lifts, nothing really spectactular.
Meno/Sand & Roca/Sur together was good, but I really wanted to see Katia & Ilia together. Well, I must say, this was one of my favorite moments of the whole show, they really took my breath away. Some people might disagree, but there was something about them, something that just made me think they are right for each other. In many ways, they skate pretty similar. Both have a real passion for the music and interpreting it, and both skate with that Russian speed and flair. I really enjoyed this programs, and the lifts were great.
Kurt's Play That Funky Music was, as always, a fav. with the females in the crowd. He was quite "on" in this number, hitting his 2 axel, 3 salchow, 3 toe, 3 toe/2 toe, 2 axel as usual. He can really dance and light up a crowd. I just wished his Brickhouse clip was still in the program, but oh well, he was still amazing as usual.
Kristi hit her 3 flip, a 3 toe, and 2 axel, in her "Smooth" number. I almost liked it better than on TV, I think she might be settling into it finally.
Next up, Ilia and his baseball cap. I really, really liked this number. It kinda reminded me of Josee's sweater program, but not really, just the way the vocals were kinda quick and hard to understand at times, but they still had the same playful attitude. He can work with the hat well, and he landed some good jumps too, a 3 flip(unbelievable is all I can say for this jump), 3 lutz, 3 toe(I think), and 1 axel. I can't wait to see this number on TV sometime.
Tara was next with "American Woman" and I think the number worked for her. Again, pretty solid with the jumps. 3 toe, 3 loop or salchow(I don't know why I can't remember, but she did a 3 loop in one program, and the 3 salchow in the other), and then again, it seemed on the second jump, she was going for a flip, but she backed out at the last second, and did a toe loop, which she doubled and turned out of. It's just good to see her trying new styles, to see what works and what doesn't.
Just like Scott's always said, "Versatility-the key to longevity" Scott, as always, was great with his classical parody. Isn't this the same music John Curry skated to in his 1976 Olympic LP? I think so, and I know several others have used this music, but all I kept picturing in my head was John Curry when Scott was skating. Anyway, he hit his 3 double axels in a row, a 2 lutz, 2 toe(I think), and the 2 backflips, earning him the only full standing ovation of the night (well, besides the ending, that is) I think this number will become one of his classics, one to remember forever, and when he jumped up with the rope it really gave the audience a surprise, especially to those sitting right on the ice where the rope was!
The ending number I also liked a lot more than last year's, I think it was a good way to rap up two solid hours of great skating. Again, the music was pounding, and it really gave you a strong feeling, which is right for the excitement level of the whole show.
I just have one question... Does anyone know who the woman was that Kurt came over to in the on-ice seats right close to the tunnel, picked up, and took backstage with him? My mom thought it was Sonja, but I didn't get a good look at her, so I don't know.
Overall, an incredible, amazing show, I'm sooo glad I got to go! I don't think it topped the 97/98 Led Zeppelin-themed show I saw in Worcester, but it was still better than last year's, and still amazing. I know, I keep using the same words, but it's just because I still can't believe how good it was and how close to the ice I was!
