I attended Kristi Yamaguchi's Holiday on Ice last night in Denver. Boy we are on a roll out here in Colorado with world class skating events (we deserve it IMHO after having none for many years!). Here is my quick review for people who are interested. I think they are broadcasting this on TBS around Dec. 13. It was a wonderful show.
The skaters were: Kristi Y., Kurt Browning, Todd Eldredge, Steven Cousins, Brian Orser, Angela Nikodinov, Roz Sumners, Meno & Sand, Brasseur & Eisler, Roca & Sur and the Steiglers. A great cast! The bad news is Katia Gordeeva was scheduled to be there and had to withdraw due to injury according to the announcer. Big groan from the audience.
I didn't know most of the music that the skaters skated to. Didn't buy a program. Each did a holiday number and then one of their regular programs.
Kristi is doing a new program "From This Moment" which I think is sung by Shania Twain. It's the music that was in Tara's special last year. She has a two piece sparkly pink outfit and skated beautifully to it. She completed a triple flip and doubled her toe. Don't recall her holiday music, but she skated in her cute holiday outfit from last year with the striped top with fur on the sleeves. I think she hit a triple toe in this number.
Kurt Browning was not on in the jump department. His first number was "Play that Funky Music White Boy", very remniscent of Brick House. What a great entertainer he is and great, effortless footwork. I liked the program alot and wonder if it is his new program for SOI. He did not do any triples in this program but a ton of double axels. He seemed to have a problem with his cuff on his sleeve coming unbuttoned. Kurt came out in the second half and did a wild and crazy hyper christmas song. The music sounded like it was on fast forward shouting "It's Christmas" over and over. He had a pile of shopping bags in both hands with Christmas gifts in them and other stuff. He did this whole wild footwork routine up and down the ice flailing these bags around everywhere. Then someone threw him a GIANT stuffed teddy bear and skated with that flailing it all over the place. He stripped off his kind of urban hip hop outfit to a red velvet outfit underneath at the end. Totally hysterical. He left some stuff on the ice that we were afraid Kristi would trip over, but she did not. She did double her toe in that area so I think she saw it. A guy ran onto the ice and pulled the stuff off after Kristi got off.
Todd Eldredge: Wow. Came out all guns blasting to a holiday music selection and did one of the most high, perfect amazing triple axels I have ever seen. His triple axel seems to have improved since the Olympics. He also did a triple lutz and somehow fell on the the triple toe. It was a powerful performance. In the second half, Todd came out and skated to "The Glory", the song he won the Master's with. I am so privileged to have seen that in person. I think it is his best program yet, and I loved "Il Mare." He did another fantastic triple axel, loop and toe, and doubled the lutz. He got the only total standing ovation of the night. The crowd leaped to its feet at the ending. HIs spins are so exciting!
Angela did a nice holiday number and in the second half did her "Dust In the Wind" number. She was very pleasant to watch. Great flow, power and speed. Gorgeous double axels and layback, but doubled her toe a couple of times. I think she maybe did hit one but I can't recall.
Roz Sumners was delightful both times. I have really enjoyed her skating the last few years. She singled her axel in both programs. Her second half program was breathtakingly gorgeous. It was some Irish sounding holiday music and she had a beautiful billowy peach dress on. Hope they show that number.
Meno & Sand. What a treat to see them as they are one of my favorites. They reprised their Europa number from SOI last year in the first half. Skated perfectly. In the second half they did a holiday number and it was lovely, just a glitchy landing on the throw double axel. They look great.
Steiglers: Just beautiful and fit right in. They did a program with a duet from a musical something like "All I ask from you." Had some really neat moves like a pair spin when she is in a split position. They did a throw triple loop with her in a very low landing, but completed. The only thing I noticed is she has really grown tall. In the group numbers she was clearly taller than Jenni, Kristi, Isabelle, etc. She almost looks too tall for Johnnie now, though hopefully he will grow more.
Brasseur & Eisler: Both numbers were total crowd pleasers as usual with their amazing tricks. No throw jumps. They did a split triple twist in the first number as good as any eligible skaters. Their holiday number was to Barbara Streisand's version of "Jingle Bells", very fast paced and fun! They were they only other skaters to get the crowd partially on their feet for a standing O, other than Todd.
Roca & Sur reprised their Oye Como Va number from SOI last year. Their holiday number was beautiful and they had the MOST gorgeous costumes of the evening. Her's was magenta with flowing skirt and his was purple. Just a feast for the eyes when combined with their skating.
Brian Orser was jumping better than Kurt! His holiday number was high energy and vintage Brian. He did a swing number that I thought was not quite as successful. He has on yellow pants and black and white top and skate covers.
Steven Cousins was really on in his first number. Did a zillion triple toes. Don't know what the music was. Very entertaining. He also came out later and did a holiday number and looked tired by then, no triples.
Right after the intermission four big fat Santa's came out and skated together to a jazzy Christmas number and threw candy to the audience. At the end the announcer said the Santa's were Todd, Steven, Brian & Kurt. It was hilarious and well done. They all did sort of a kick line at the end and dove on their bellies.
Retakes were just as much fun as the show. First up was Angela Nikodinov to re do her triple toe. She must be new at this as she did her program with no music and hit a perfect triple toe. The producer came over the mike and said Angela, we need to do it with your music. Then they told her to start from the spin. Music played and she hit the triple toe again, but had not done the spin. So she had to do it again. When she finally got it right she got huge applause.
Meno & Sand had to retake their throw double axel from the holiday number. She had a very scratchy landing so they did it again. She had a less scratchy landing the second time. The producer asked if they were happy and they shook their heads no. The third time was a charm and it was perfectly done.
Retakes were done by Kristi for the triple toe in the Shania Twain number, Todd Eldredge for the missed triple toe in his holiday number and the doubled lutz in his Glory number. Roz came out and did her double axel for the Irish number. All hit on the first try no problem. Brian Orser re-did his triple salchow. Kurt re-did the whole first part of his "Play that Funky Music" program and did a double axel, half loop, triple salchow and then down the ice for a triple toe. All in all a great show! Can't wait to get it on tape.
