Parent Helps:

For the Children's Sake. Susan Schaeffer Mcaulay views education as the "diet that opens doors for each child to build a realationship with God, other persons, and the universe." This is a sharp contrast to most philosopies of education which treat children as "containers" to be filled up with predigested information. The book shares ways homeschooling can be a joyous celebration of life.

How to Home School: A Practical Approach
by Gayle Graham. A homeschooling Mom with ten years of experience shares everything you need to know to successfully teach your children...and more! In a common sense, easy to read style, Mrs. Graham discusses planning for success (getting organized, managing the home and school, setting goals); knowing your children's learning styles and needs; taking the worry out of language arts, math, science, and history; approaches to standardized testing; the advantages of unit studies; and choosing curriculum. The book also includes lots of reproducible forms for housekeeping, scheduling, planning, etc.

You CAN Teach Your Child Successfully
by Ruth Beechick. Written for home teachers of grades 4-8, this book was recognized in Teaching Home Magazine as the best book of 1990 and it still surpasses many of the more recent books. It first discusses developmental stages that occur during those grades, then covers every subject area, giving ideas for making teaching more meaningful and creative. This book is encouraging that you CAN teach successfully and gives wonderful ideas on how to do it.

Good Stuff
by Rebecca Rupp. Those who subscribe to Country Magazine may have read Rupp's articles about home schooling. Here she has catalogued all the "good stuff" that can enhance the learning process. There are annotated lists of books, games, projects, kits, toys, magazines, and more for every subject area (reading, writing, math, science, history, etc.) as well as for building thinking skills and developing life skills. We are not talking curriculum here, but all the extras that make home schooling more enjoyable. Some of the suggested resources may be unsuitable to Christians, but overall, the book is a great guide to all the "good stuff" out there for home schoolers to use.

The Ultimate Guide to Home Schooling
by Debra Bell. This book was hot off the press in 1997 and is really great. It covers everything from "Is Homeschooling for You" to "Choosing a Curriculum" to "Organizing your Home" to " Home Schooling Teens" to "How to Avoid Burnout" and more. The book is huge (over 400 pages), but is laid out in small "bites" so it is easy to read and easy to scan for the "meat". It also includes product reviews in each subject area and recommended resources.

The Big Book of Home Learning
by Mary Pride has accomplished the colossal task of commenting on every product, catalog, magazine, organization, philosophy, and method available to homeschoolers today. There are three volumes and each gives teaching tips and helpful commentary as well as product reviews. Volume 1, Getting Started covers major home school methods, answers to frequently asked questions, and planning tips.Volume 2, Preschool and Elementary reviews products and provides teaching tips, and Volume 3, Teen & College covers middle school, high school and college at home.

The A-Z Guide to Educational Field Trips
by April Purcell. Imagine someone going through the yellow pages of a modest-size town and putting together a simple guide for turning every major heading of the phone book into a field trip destination for children aged 5-15. This book tells you how to turn even a visit to the gas station into an educational field trip. The guide provides background information about each destination, questions children can ask, vocabulary, supplemental activities, and even a section offering relevant Biblical principles for each profession.
