Maeve Binchy is an Irish writer who writes wonderful stories. Tara Road, her latest, is now available in the US! I've added it to the list now.
Pat Conroy has a wonderfully lyrical way of writing. My mom and I have spent hours discussing his books; scenes that made us laugh, scenes that made us cry. Shortly after Beach Music was published, he was in Greenville, SC for a book-signing. Mom gave me an autographed copy of the book for Christmas that year. If I were ever stranded on a deserted island, I'd definitely need these 3 books with me.
