FORNICATION AND ADULTERY

Adultery, Fornication and Divorce

"If they speak not according to this Word it is because there is no Light in them." Isaiah 8:20

"Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you? therefore glorify G-d in your body, and in your spirit, which are G-ds'." I Corinthians 6:18-20

There has never been a time when G-d permitted either fornication or adultery. This is particularly true within the Assemblies of Yeshua (Jesus) today.

Believers are led astray thinking they are "in love" so it doesn't matter, or "their hearts are right" with a certain person so it is permitted. [1]

SCRIPTURE

Matthew 5:32 "But (de) I (ego) say (lego) unto you (humin), That (hoti) whosoever (hos) (an) shall put away (apoluo) his (autos) wife (gune), saving (parektos) for the cause (logos) of fornication (porneia), causeth (poieo) her (autos) to commit adultery (moichao) and (kai) whosoever (hos) (ean) shall marry (gameo) her that is divorced (apoluo) committeth adultery (moichao)."

REFERENCES

"'That every one that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress.' The mere fact of divorce did not make her an adulteress, but it brought her into a state of disgrace from which she invariably sought to free herself by contracting another marriage, and this other marriage to which her humiliating situation drove her made her an adulteress.

"'Whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.' The Law of divorce will be found at #De 24:1-4. Jesus explains that this Law was given by Moses on account of the hardness of the people's hearts; that is, to prevent greater evils (#Mt 19:8). The Law Permitted the husband to put away the wife when he found 'some unseemly thing in her' (#Ge 24:1). But Jesus here limits (and defines) the Right of divorce to cases of unchastity, and if there be a divorce on any other ground, neither the man nor the woman can marry again without committing adultery (#Mt 19:9). Such is Jesus' modification of the Old Testament Law, and in no part of the New Testament is there any relaxation as to the Law here set forth. It is implied that divorce for unchastity breaks the Marriage bond (The Covenant), and it is therefore held almost universally, both by commentators and moralists, that the innocent party to such a divorce CAN marry again. Of course, the guilty party could not, for no one is allowed by Law to reap the benefits of his own wrong. For further light on the subject, see #Ro 7:1-3 1Co 7:10-16,39. It is much to be regretted that in many Protestant countries the civil authorities have practically set aside this Law of Christ by allowing divorce and remarriage for a variety of causes. No man who respects the Authority of Christ can take advantage of such legislation." (The Fourfold Gospel; 242)

"'Causeth her'; exposeth her to commit adultery; because, according to the Law of Christ's Kingdom, her marriage to another man will be regarded as adultery." (Family Bible)

If either the man or woman departs of their own will, the innocent party is free to remarry.[2]If one partner is Saved, and the other is not, it does not constitute a valid reason for divorce.

REFERENCE

"I Corinthians 7:15 {10} 'But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in {m} such [cases]: {11} but God hath called us to peace.'

"{10} He answers a question: what if the unfaithful forsake the faithful? Then the faithful is free, he says, because he is forsaken by the unfaithful.

"(m) When any such thing happens.

"{11} Lest any man upon pretence of this liberty should give an occasion to the unfaithful to depart, he shows that marriage contracted with an infidel (an unsaved person) ought to be kept peaceably, that if it is possible the infidel may be won to the faith." (The Geneva Bible; 1560-1602)

FOOTNOTES

[1] Just as the Gentiles are not under whole Torah, so too the unsaved are not under the Laws of Christs' Kingdom.

At the point of Salvation, all sin is Forgiven.

[2] Should a Believing spouse depart from The Covenant putting away a husband or wife who has not broken The Covenant (the one being put away being innocent; not having committed fornication), the innocent spouse is free to remarry.

On the other hand, the same Believing spouse who has put away "without cause", (i.e., no valid New Testament cause: no fornication), is not free to remarry. I Corinthians 7:10.

Furthermore, no one who calls himself "Pastor", "Apostle", "Prophet", "Evangelist" or claims any other Biblical Office has the Right to come between either husband or wife falsely saying obedience is to himself and not the unbelieving spouse. (we have heard of such cases).

"And the woman which has a husband that believes not, if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him." I Corinthians 7:13.
