Naja

Growing up my entire life we've always had cats; lots of cats. Usually 8-12 at a time because we could never turn away strays. Some just hung out on our porch, ate our food, and played with us when we went outside. Others were inside/outside cats (as they preferred) that were family animals and everyone was very close to.

When I moved to California in January 1997 it was the first time in my life I'd lived with no cats around me. I was in agony! I missed their purring and soft, warm bodies curling up on my lap to sleep. Since we were living with friends we could not get our own cat, and I swore the day that I had my own place and was able, I would own my very own cat...the first to be mine and no one else's.

When my fiancee and I got our apartment in October 1997, we immdediately began the search for our first cat. We went to the Louisiana State University vet school (close to our house) and they just happened to have one little kitten that needed a home. She was only 2 weeks old, however, and we had to wait 'til she was four weeks before we could bring her home. I got to hold her...she was SO small and furry. They said she was a Tortoise Shell Tabby and would have very long hair.

I went to visit her twice before her homecoming so she could get used to me. Everytime I saw her she was a little bigger and even prettier. I was dying to bring her home, but they told me I would have to wait an extra week. Little did I know they were all in cahoots with my fiancee to make me think I had to wait and I came home one day to find this beautiful, little fluff ball sitting on the bed.

Her name came a few days later, it just popped into my head for some reason I cannot explain and it fits her perfect. Naja (pronounced similar to pasta with the long "a's") got more beautiful every single day! She is getting bigger and fatter and I have to say she is the most beautiful kitten I've ever seen. Everyone who comes to the house cannot get over her beauty. With her long hair and adorable face she looks like an innocent, little angel.

And that's where she gets you! Naja is by no means an angel! She seems to have a vicious streak and will get into these crazy hyper moods where she runs around the room and then attacks you (usually your hands, which she has an obession about) like a little snake. She doesn't attack like normal cats because she has never really been around other cats. My hands are constantly scratched and marked from her little attacks. She is quite a little brat, getting into everything, but you can't help but love this little ball of fur!

When she's being good, however, she's a doll. She sleeps with us every night and has just recently taken to sucking on the blanket on our bed. She follows me all around the house and likes to curl up and sleep on me or next to me when she gets tired. Now that we have our small Christmas tree up she loves to curl up under it and go to sleep (except for when she's attacking the ornaments!).

She just recently got a brother, a puppy named Mason who's half Akita. Even though he's three times her size, she loves to attack him and chase him around. They're very good friends and love to play and sleep together. Naja's favorite toy seems to be the squishies I use to keep my hair up. If I take one out and leave it on the coffee table she will get it and drag it all around the house.

She's my little baby and I love her to death. Everyday she gets a little bit prettier and smarter, and every day I love her more.
