A Warm
to our new editions!
On Thursday, April 23, 1998 we welcomed a little family of 5 into the McMillan clan. I would like now to introduce them to you.
It all began around 6:00 PM on the aforementioned evening. My fiance and I were taking a walk down the road behind our apartment. It is all owned by our landlord and most of the little duplexes are currently abandoned. I decided to go exploring in the last house and was surprised to see a beautiful Calico cat walk into the main room as I stepped through the door. I was in the processing of coaxing her to me when my dog bounded in after me and scared the cat. She hissed and spat and I put him back outside, shutting the door firmly behind me. The cat was pretty shook up and continued to hiss at me. I decided to let her get used to me on her own time and I continued to explore the rest of the house. There are a lot of strays living in these abandoned houses, and most of them were terrified of people. I soon realized she was following me. I turned around and began talking to her, but she seemed to want me to follow her. I did and walked into the kitchen behind her to see a box and some cans of moist cat food. "Who's been feeding you, pretty kitty?", I asked and I walked over to inspect the food and box.
Imagine my surprise to see 4 little kittens asleep in the box! I called in my fiance and we decided we had to adopt them. It was cold outside and the momma cat was jumpy and terrified of every noise she heard outside. It was obvious she was a cat that was used to people, but not used to living outside. A few of our friends had come to visit and came in to check out the kittens. The momma was scared and wary of everyone who came in except for my fiance and I. (I guess it goes to show the old saying is true, "we don't choose them, they choose us"!) We brought them to our house, and the trip was very scary for the momma. Finally, after about 20 minutes inside she was calm and looked rather happy. An hour later she was lying on the rug in front of our bed, cleaning herself and purring contentedly. This was a cat who was used to being inside! Later that night, she got the courage to explore the rest of the house and even used the litter box. I told her that she and her babies were safe now and would never have to worry about anything again. She meowed at me and I believe she felt she'd chosen the right people.
That same night she met with Mason and Naja. Mason was attacked every time he stepped foot in the room, but she is getting used to him now. He's very curious about the kittens, but she only lets him look from across the room now. I think he is excited at the prospect of having four new little playmates as I believe Naja feels she is "too mature" to play with him anymore. Naja and the momma had one small confrontation and now respect each other's space. Naja doesn't go in our bedroom anymore and the momma leaves Naja alone when she comes up front. It all seems to be working out nicely.
Let me tell you about the new ones, now! We named them before we even got them home! Spoon named the momma Cleopatra for her large green eyes that are heavily black rimmed around them. She is a lovely and sweet Calico with white, peach, and gray fur that is striped and patched all over her body. She is very talkative and fusses at us when we argue. She will interrupt us when she feels our voices get to high by walking over and "fussing" in a stern meow. We love her already. The babies were only around a week or two old when we found them; none of their eyes were even open yet! I am happy to report that as of this writing (April 29), all of their eyes have opened and they are starting to move around a lot more, even though they don't actually have their sight yet. Since we intend to keep them all (I hate to separate the little families..it breaks my heart), we wanted to name them something that connected them in some way. According to their coloring we have named them: Dae (a little orange male named for the color of the sky at Day), Nyte (a little black female with a white underbelly named for the color of the sky at Night), Duskk (a little gray and white male named for the color of the sky at Dusk), and Dawnn (a little golden and brown striped female named for the color of the sky at Dawn).
We are so happy they have come into our lives. They are a joy and we love each of them already. Yes, we shall have 6 cats when they are all grown, but a house full of cats is a Happy Home!
