Pro-Abortion Hero: Letter to the Editor
          By Thomas L. McFadden, Jr,
          Winchester, Virginia

          To the Editor:

The front page of the HERALD recently was dedicated to John Glenn (ACH 11/5/98).  I wonder whay a Catholic paper would consider this person and his accomplishments in space to be of importance to the reader of this Catholic paper.  I guess many people consider Senator Glenn to be a hero and perhaps the editor of the HERALD thought that by highlighting the actions of this "Great American Hero" it might give the reader a sense of patriotism and pride.

But is this man, Senator John Glenn, truly a hero?  Is this anyone that should be admired for his great achievement and noble qualities?  Is this man one that has shown great courage in the face of danger or evil?  Perhaps in his role in the space program he can be considered a hero.  But on a moral level he is everything but a hero.  He has served the people of Ohio as a senator.  But he has given in the evil temptation to turn his back on the most defenseless and innocent menbers of his state: the unborn babies.  He is a pro-abortion politician who cooperates in the evil of the abortion doctors and the evil of abortion in general because of his lack of moral courage in the U.S. Senate.  I can understand why a secular newspaper would think that he is a hero but I cannot understand why the HERALD would consider him to be one, at least enough of one to take over the front page.

Catholics of today need heroes, maybe even more so than in previous years, but we need true heroes, people who have shown heroic qualities in times of duress and temptation, people who have used heroic measures to ensure that Christ's teachings and commands are followed.  Catholics need to be educated or re-educated about the lives of the saints.  These men and women  were faced with the same problems and moral crises that we face and they overcame them, through the grace of God. Saints can be truly considered heroes because they fought the good fight and were victorious in their battle against sin and corruption.  They have been rewarded with the gift of the Beatific Vision in Heaven and have been cannonized by the Church as examples of true Christian lives.

I believe that you should try to stay away from promoting, especially in a Catholic paper, the "venerating and honoring" of men and women who are not strong in their moral lives and move people to venerate and honor the holy members of the Church Triumphant in heaven.  We need to pray to these saintly heroes for their intercession in changing the hearts and minds of these worldly heroes toward the Truth.

A note from the Web Master:

It is noteworthy and honorable that some folks are willing to stand up for a ban on Partial-Birth Abortion.  Let us not forget that ordinary everyday Abortion is also murder.  We must understand that murder is murder no matter the method.  Because one method of abortion seems to be horrible does not justify the other methods.  We should be horrified and sickened by any Abortion regardless of the method.  The Fifth Commandment spells it out clearly: "Thou shalt not kill."  A fetus is a person, a human being with a God given soul.  Imagine the pain the Lord must feel when any Abortion occurs.  Please contact both of your Senators and Representative, via letter or phone,  to let them know how horrified you are that Abortions are legal and to stop Partial-Birth Abortions and all other Abortions as soon as possible.
(Apparently they do not respond to email therefore it is better to write or telephone.)
